Basically as the title says im after a gps camera detector and have been looking at mainly the snooper sapphire, novus rider, novus alpha and the road angel plus. I would prefer battery power but would consider the cigar power. I have heard good things about the PogoAlert but at £249 its above my budget of £150. Any opinions really smile

Hi,

I just got the sapphire and am still working it out.....so far impressed.
Basically i had an insurance payout and wanted to replace a tomtom that went walkies.
I replaced the tomtom with a one europe to use in one car and to give me my speed reading, and also forked out for the sapphire as it apparently has the best camera database. when i used it for the first time i was pleasantly surprised to see that the sapphire actually shows your live speed at the same time. i bomb along the m4 quite a lot and it picked up gatsos and the speedcurbs into hammersmith.
i have a 'funrun' down to the coast this weekend so will let you know what my 'co-driver' picks up......

I use two systems. a TomTom 1 with the speed camera addition in my work car (for the Satnav) and a BTST Speed Camera Detector in my Marcos.

In Simple terms the TomTom system is of limited use and inaccurate despite the regular updates. It does not reliably warn of mobile traps and produces three readings in my area set at the wrong speed (in one case it shows a camera to be set at 40mph instead of 60 and in the other two cases it shows 30 mph speed limits instead of 60!).

The BTST on the other hand appears to be 100% accurate so far (subject to at least weekly down load of data). It does warn of actual mobile traps and popular mobile trap locations. It usually tells you about the type of speed trap device being used and has various setting that display different infomation. Mine is set to show actual MPH (GPS speed over ground reading) and current speed limit (correct whereas the TomTom is not). On the downside, its constant nagging can get a bit wearing and its warning alarms are designed to wake you up rather than politely draw your attention to the camera. The display screen is larger than most which can be a drawback if you have a low steeply raked windscreen. The original active sync setup to my PC was a bit of a pain but it works fine once sorted. I don't think that they are available in the shops which make them difficult to compare, I took a chance and bought mine online last year.

Any sat nav system being used to warn of speed cameras is only as accurate as the database it is relying on. One of the best databases around is available from http://www.pocketgpsworld.com

£19 per year subscription, and the database is updated at least once a month.

The new Road Angel Professional is out now for £249 and the connected version (wireless auto updates over GPRS) for £299. I'll be taking a look at them tomorrow. They're about as good as they get from what I've heard. GPS location and Laser detection.

Speak to MADT350 as i fear you may be wasting your money on the road angel. He can either confirm or deny if i am right. He is the man to speak to round here about these things.

Precisely. I am no expert in all these units whereas t350 is. However i have used a roadangel and compared to my Pogo its like taking a step back in time kinda like putting square wheels on your car when you know round ones will make life a lot easier. Road angel has loads of false alerts is not as regulalry updated as pogo (so far as i am aware) etc etc..

As said speak to madt350 he will def point you in the right direction.
