???BROKEN GEARBOX???

car was running fine tonight. popped home & dashed in to pick up my sat nav. left car running on driveway.

hopped back in & went to put it in gear, there was a slight momentary grinding noise & then it was as if i had no gearbox! you can now move the gear lever in a complete circle round its gaiter. its like a computer joystick.

clutch & engine seem unaffected

can any of you far more knowledgable chaps give me some pointers as to whats wrong?

Sounds like a broken gear lever or selector!

May just be that the lever has came loose, can you lift the leaver upwards as if it is disconnected from the box. If you can it's a simple fix(ish) which will require you to remove the centre armrest console and the hanbrake grip and gaitor. There is a very small allan key (bolt) that will require tighting down in the hole that is left when you remove all the above. This secures the gearstick to the top of gearbox. It's a bit fidlly but I managed to do it and I'm a numpty with the spanners!!.

thanks for that. however it doesnt seem that i can lift the gear lever any higher than normal, its just really loose & flappy.

i'll be very happy if it is just a simple case of a loose gear lever though!

anyone else have any suggestions?

I think you would know if it was just the grub-screw that has come loose - you will literally be able to lift up the gearstick as already said. Doesn't sound like that's your problem to me....fingers crossed for you that it's not anything serious but it doesn't sound good.

got the car back today. it was just a sheared bolt. there are 2 bolts connecting the alloy gear lever to the gearbox, the lower one had sheared, leaving the gear lever to pivot around the top bolt & flop about.

an easy fix. quite releived about that!
