As the title says really, I have the choice of a higher resolution Nikon D80 or an older D100 with more functionality.

I have finally decided to join the digital revolution and ditch my trusty old
Pentax ME Super and need a Digital that will give me similar functions. I don't have enough knowledge to know which of my two options will be the best choice for me. Oh, and I have until the end of today to decide frown

I have a D70s and found it to have more than enough features for me. So I would say go for the newer D80. its also smaller and lighter to carry.

You don't say what your budget is or what you'll mainly be shooting. I would say go for the best you can within your budget.

I have an opportunity to get either of these cameras for the same money (well below RRP) and will be using them mainly for landscape photography (using Cokin/Hoya filters, bracketed exposure etc etc) and some motor sport photography.

I'd go for the D80 without a doubt. Resolution aside, the technology will be much improved over the D100 which came out in 2002 - that's a geological timespan in digital.

D80 benefits from lower noise (than the D200 even), and the D200's metering system. You loose speed and robustness/handling though I thing.

D80 would be my bet - or a D200 must be cheap these days with the D300 out?

D80 without a doubt. I had the D100 a few years ago and Mrs CVP's new D80 knocks the spots off it in terms of overall performance. Secondhand D200 could be an interesting option though.

Remember a body is only part of the package, decent lenses are what make the most difference. If you can save a bit on the body (even get something second hand) in order to invest in better lenses then do so. My old D50 took cracking photos because it was coupled with decent Nikon f2.8 APS lenses.
A good starter lens is the Nikon 80-200 f2.8D, very good value second hand.

Anyway back to the plot, of the two listed I would go for the D80. It's basically a D200 in a lower spec body and a few features downgraded, same sensor though. I have one and it's excellent.
