I have just spent an hour and half on the A40 W12 with one of the Camera vans and was astonished to see two motorcylcles travelling in excess of 100mph in a 40 limit, both were caught on camera. In total in the time mentioned over 100 motorists were caught well over the speed limit, which was set above ACPO guidelines.............

And the van was clearly marked, warning signs deployed, operators outside of van wearing "hi vis", and van in an "accident blackspot"?
Yes, the van was well marked, yes everyone was wearing Hi-viz Police motorway jackets, inside and out of the van and yes there are plenty of speed camera signs along the stretch of the A40.
This section of road,is a dual carriageway, in a residential area, in fact it`s less than 1/2 a mile away from the site of the Fatal RTA which Tony Rec attended a few weeks ago.....the one with the motorcyclist who lost both his arms and was then run over.
Our camera vans attend sites which have a real and proven need of enforcement, all of which are linked to current accident stats.....

Does the dual carriageway have fences etc to prevent pedestrian access to crossing the road?
I assume also that the 40mph spped limit has been in force some time?
To be honest if the camera van is clearly maked and is using a Gatso, so you have to pass it before you are done I am not sure there is any valid reason to object to being caught. After all its no real difference to being caught by an old-fashioned copper with a radar gun.
If you can't see the van and slow down as you pass it then there is something wrong with ones observation skills.
Mind you if scores of people are driving past in excess of the speed limit that implies that maybe the speed limit is incorrect. However only detailed investigation of the accident statistics would show what caused them, and whether the speed limit appeared correct. It could be the accidents were happening in the rush hour where a speed limit of 40mph was justified but at other times it wasn't.
However I don't know the road!

The 'Accident' that Willcrash mentioned happened at 0430hrs on a Sunday morning.
I do disagree with you when you say that 'as a result of too many people speeding then maybe the speed limit is too slow'!!!!
I firmly believe that people should slow down as its a well know Accident blackspot which on recent accidents that ive attended at that location seems to affect Motorbikes more than cars.People tend to lose their bottle (read confidence), more easily on a motorcycle when it starts to go wrong and panic.
I had a post on here about 2 months ago stating that i parked my Battenbug Trafpol car directly behind this Camera van on the A40 so that both vehicles were VERY noticable.
However, this did not stop the 3 cars etc per minute that were getting captured by the camera, driving at above 56mph in the 40 limit. In short, if motorists cant see both the Police car and van parked up at the side of the road then theres a real problem. If however, they do see us and choose not to slow down then theres an even bigger problem that needs to be addressed! (no, its not that the speed limit needs to be raised).

This section of road has no fences to prevent pedestrians walking onto it, their are cars parked down the nearside, there is a central rerservation.
The speed limit has been 40MPH for as long as I can remember.
The vast majority of RTA`s that I have attended on this section of road have been down to speed coupled with without due care.....
The camera van was parked there today from 07.30hrs so the motorists/bikers caught were speeding in rush hour traffic......... in fact they are always speeding.
I have on one occasion had two marked Police bikes on attendance to stop people who are driving without due care & attention and speeding.
Anyway I really don`t think you can justify travelling 30/50 or even 40MPH over the speed limit whatever the conditions.

This represents a sudden and fearsome change to our environment! A scamera operator!
Well, welcome aboard, glad to see your here.
Be interesting to see your views.
A little about you; are you a traffic cop like Tony?
Do you get any input in where you put the van?
Are you able to vary the trigger speed for the van, depending where you put it and what your perception of a safe speed is on that road, or are the tolerances set into the machine?

Hi!!
Yes I am a Traff.Pol like TonyRec. I`m just having a break for a bit on the camera van.
I initially had very little input as to where the van was placed ,but as I disagreed totally with the loctions I was given, I had all the sites scrapped and researched my own sites which I knew had an unfortunate record of Fatal RTA`s and were a persistant problem. These roads have been targeted by Traff.Pols for many years.
I collated all the RTA stats for the roads in question and not surprisingly they more than fitted the criteria. I only attend sites where there is a proven serious RTA record.
With regard to the threshold speed I cannot set it as I see fit, there does need to be some uniformity. However the threshold speed is set above current ACPO guidelines and is really at a limit where most Traffic Officers would handout a ticket.

Good on you!
This is why most of us on here don't want the civilians manning these things. They don't have your experience, attitude or resources.

My favorite bit. Respect!
Thanks for that mate....I`m willing to answer any questions (within reason) about camera vans.
I feel the more peple know about them and the way they should be operated the better. I try to run the camera van as fairly as possible.
Anyway I`m off the unit in late September and another Traff.Pol takes over.....there is no chance of a civilian operating it.

Back on a serious note, that's good to hear. They technology may be applied madly and blindly by the powers that be, but at least if people like you and Tony are working (keeping safe roads free of the damn things, and putting them where they catch nutters) it the law abiding amongst us have a chance!

BTW, when you edit a post more than once you can delete the line at the bottom so they don't stack up.
