Hi all

I did a search but to no avail.. Does anyone know how much oil a 335d (or 535d) takes. Mine has just had its 1st service and BMW charged me for 8 litres which seemed a lot and the oil level on dip stick is about 0.5 cm over the max mark (I measured it as per the hand book - flat level surface, engine off from warm, wait 5 mins). Will too much oil damage the engine? The owners manual says take it straight to the dealer if its been overfilled.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Cheers

8 Litres would seem about right. Its a big engine with 2 turbos to lubricated.
If you are worried about the level then yes you should take it back. Being overfilled is just as bad a running low as it can blow seals in the engine (although yours isnt that bad).
For peace of mind you could happlily take it back and ask for half a litre to be drained.
Ask them what the capacity is at the same time, see if they still say 8 litres.

PS - the problem you are probably getting is when it was filled with oil when cold it was on the max mark. With the engine warm the oil will expand a tiny amount causing it to creep up over as you describe.

Thanks Neil, appreciated. VBines Redhill told me 7.5 litres and there will be no issue with overfilling - I only hope they weren't just trying to get me off the phone..

Sounds about right, when I change the oil and filter on my older 325TDS that takes 6.5l
