Guys and Gals
Am planning a trip to northern Italy for mid May in the Tam and looking for advice on the most enjoyable driving route across the Alps. Given time of year I thought that I should stick to the major tunnels = Mont Blanc or St Gotthard but what about down from Innsbrook?
Also intend to go up Stelvio while I am there - any views on whether it would be open in mid May?
Any tips welcome.

whilst stelvio is obviously impressive it does get very busy. i enjoyed some of the less well known passes (pretty much every one except stelvio) far more.

We go on holiday to Vipiteno, Sterzing in German, nearly every year. In northern Italy you can speak German, the region used to belong to Austria, and has all the good things Germany has like clean restrooms, good service, and cheap clean B&B, and as a big bonus, GREAT Italian food.

The misses does all the route planning, i do the driving (BIG SMILE).

Stelvio and on the Austrian side the Timmelsjoch, are very good, unfortunately they are overcrowded. When you plan to do these you should drive them as early as possible in the morning or late afternoon with good weather and enjoy the ride and the scenery. Although if you drive like me, there's hardly any time to look at the scenery, but boy is it fun !!!!

We know loads of nice driving routes in that area, some of them used to be used for hill climbs in the past. Many of these routes don't have big names like the Stelvio, but they are just as entertaining, and don't forget the great food on the way.

I may get the misses to scan the routes she has marked on her maps as interesting to a pdf for those interested.

Thanks for the info. WOuld be interested in any scanned routes - honouring your IPR of course. Do you have any experience of the area in May? Some contacts have said nono it can still be snow/ice of the major routes/passes.

I like the Innsbruck Trento road, but its best in the evening. Some nice quick bends & aural tunnels, you can make haste all the way down to Garda. There are also some fun roads round Lake Garda wink

Main advantage of this route is that you have free fast roads thru Germany, but tolls in Austria & Italy. Personally find French & Swiss roads a bit of a pain, & prefer Tirollean & Italian Police / customs hehe

By what time in the day does Stelvio become busy? Looking at the Top Gear footage they must have been there early.

I've been at midday and it makes blackpool in summer look empty!

The Mont Cenis pass is definitely worth a go if you want to do the western alps.

Sadly many passes, esp. the higher ones incl. Stelvio, will most likely still be closed in Mid May.
Depending on weather. As Swiss has loads of great passes I still prefer the Italy/Austria passes as speed limit is 100 km/h (62 mph) instead of the Swiss 80 km/h (50 mph).

If you want to come via Inssbruck ther is nice Roundtrip through Sterzing then the Valle Pusteria to Lienz, (try Staller Sattel- if you know German this tells you opening times of passes and nice routes http://www.tourenland.de/paesse) and then back via Felbertauernsstrasse and Kitzbuhel
You could also go South via Cortina and the Route Grande Dolomitii (Stelvio, Falzarego, Pordoi which will bring you towards veneto)
Good Alternative to the Gotthard Tunnel is the Pass
Have Fun
