Ignition angle?
Discussion
excuse me for being a bit thick but how do you set it as static as it has electronic ignition module which i thought could only be set dynamicaly , is the crank set to the 12deg position and the dizzy set so that the trigger is lined up with the sensor or what and there must be a dynamic setting to check as well.

am i to take it that the 12deg btdc is at idle or what as my 400 seems abit flat on takeoff and dont spin the wheels in first either, i just thought this was ok as its only a 4.0 but it seems to run out of steam at about 120mph and my 430 used to power all the way up to 160...
Blimey, I must be well off then....I had a bit of a tinker with mine last night and it pulled to 140 easily....but it still feels slower than it was pre-service
well it will go faster than 120 but it just seems to take a long time and once in top at that speed it dont accelerate at all and i think it should at least go on untill about 150 ,its had a new camshft fitted as well so it shoud be ok and its only done 60k ..oh and has anybody set theirs dynamically please

the speedo on the 430 used to over read by about 7mph but i had a hand held gps handy for most off the high speed runs and it topped out at 163 on a big wide road, but have not used this on the 400 chim as yet. thats why i was wondering if the timing was spot on but looking at the threads on here it seems that it is set by feel rather than a set of figures, yes it needs to go on a rolling road but its finding the time to get that done plus sort out the other little faults on the car(exhaust)
Ok, I have had a bit of a tinker with the dizzy...if I turn it clockwise it goes bery lumpy, making a rattling noise and stalls...if I go the other way it does not seem to do a lot, but becomes very 'wooly'....do I go the 'lumpy' way until just before it gets lumpy? (looking down on the dizzy that is clockwise)
You don't do either. Setting the ignition wrongly can screw the engine by causing pre-detonation. It also has a major effect on the emmissions and general running, so it is frequently set up using a gas analsyer and timing kit.
If you want to stop pinking then it very fine adjustments are needed and the only test is to drive the car and see if it pinks.
This is covered in the bible. The best advice is unless you know what you are doing and have the right kit to set it up... leave weel alone or get someone who does to do it.
