Hawk Stratos Back On The Road
Discussion

A photo of my recently purchased Hawk Stratos Stradale .
Twenty years after originally being built and after three years battling it out on the race tracks of Britain in the hands of her original owner she has finally hung up her helmet - for now.
I have had her resprayed in the colours of a 1970's Polish Rally team, put the lights, number plates, etc back on her, removed the door bars from the roll cage and replaced some suspension parts to soften the ride for fast road / track day use replaced the passenger seat, generally got her back to her original, road going state.
She has an Alfa 3.0L 24v V6 engine producing 275 BHP. She is extremely light and so shifts a bit

I love how she looks. (Yes, the rear louvres are dark grey and not black).

Cheers
Elliott

Mind if I asked how much you paid for it? One of those "must have sometime" cars for me!
TBH, how much I paid for it wasn't the major factor in getting hold of one.She cost me quite a bit less than 20K including a full respray which, in my opinion, is an absolute steal when you take into account the sheer workmanship that goes into building these cars.Hawk & Corse replicas are far from bolt on body kits.
No,it was finding a car for sale in the first place that was the problem. It is rare for one to come up for sale. Maybe just two or three each year if you are lucky.
Fortunately for me, the timing worked out perfectly. My advice for a potential owner is, if you find one up for sale. Move quickly if you can because the demand far outstrips the supply. One British built car was bought by an Italian last year who shipped it home.I think the guy put a deposit down before he flew over to look at it. They're as rare as hen's teeth and this one is mine and I aint selling!

yeah it does help - could I have your address and when you are likely to pop out leaving it unguarded?
I think you got a fair price. We were offered an ex-rally one by one of the Hawk people last year, at a very, very keen price (but I won't upset you...) unfortunately it came at precisely the wrong timing!

could you use the Lancia Thema 8.32 motor?
Its a Ferrari motor and there must be a rusty old Theme 8.32 decaying in a corner somewhere!!
If you fancy getting to know a bit more about the Stratos 'scene', both original and replica then check out the Forum:

The guys on there are extremely knowledgable and eager to answer any questions that you may have.

....but at the risk of upsetting them.....power-wise a stock 8.32 motor isn't really much better than the Alfa V6 (it makes less than some of the later versions of the Alfa motor). Of course, the V8 sounds nicer.

I'm not even sure I'd agree with that - the Alfa is one of the best sounding modern production engines there is, and I assume that the Thema 8.32 is a flat plane crank and so will sound like a busy 4-pot?Of course, being a V6, the Alfa engine sounds more authentic, too.
I had a friend who built a Stratos (Litton Corse) a few years ago using a Ferrari 308 motor (these being the days before the 3.0/3.2 litre 24 valve version of the Alfa was available) and while the end result was very nice, the rebuild costs on the engine were plain silly.

Sorry, i have to disagree there. While i've only ever heard a real Stratos on TV/video, an Alfa V6 does not sound like it - it's much more of a baritone sound.
The Alfa V6 is, of course, a bigger capacity than the original Ferrari V6, so, yes, it will tend to give a slightly deeper exhaust note. It will depend more on the silencer arrangement and pipe diameters - obviously your 'nicely unsilenced' Honda will sound closer to the original than a heavily silenced Alfa - but it will at least have the correct 'beat', since it has the right number of cylinders and firing order. The Alfa has the advantage of an italian bloodline, though, without any of the histrionics and expensive components that go with the Ferrari V8.

The V8 would be overkill in my opinion....

I think Ferarri did a twin plane 3.2 specifically for the 8.32 motor?
Indeed they did. De-tuned it a fair bit and made it more suited to a, well, suit! It's still a nice engine to own I suppose, but it's expensive and tricky to service by all accounts. The 8.32 in a Strat replica I saw at Oulton a while ago did sound lovely, but then I like V8s!The Alfa V6 does sound quite nice with the right exhaust. Mines far too loud for my taste at present, but it sounds really quite nasty
