Didn't use the right title to get the answers I was looking for so here we go again.

Well I've put a deposit on a 96 4.0 in a gorgeous blue etc etc. I love it. Had wedges before but need something a bit more refined etc etc. Anyway as I'm leaving this guy on Friday he says that he's taken the cats out the exhausts !!! and not sure if he still has them!!!

So my questions are
I know it isn’t going to get through it's next MOT with out them on a 96 so
1) how many and where are they? I believe that there's one in the Y section on the manifold join and are there any in the system after that? or just the pre - cats in the manifold these have been removed.
2) What's needed to get them back in? if that's possible? and or replace etc?
3) What kind of cost am I looking at as I've seen completes systems for £200 to just the Y section at £250.

Yes I'm going to haggle on the price so I need to know what I'm talking about before I want to speak to him.

Thanks in advance

well im not sure what answers you got in the other thread.(im being a bit lazy) but here's my 5p worth.

There are 3 cats in total comprising of:

1 Pre-Cat in each manifold.. totalling 2.
1 Cat in the downpipe just below where the two manifolds meet. The 'dustbin' as people call it.. since er it looks like a bin.

There are no other cats anywhere.. (unless you have a pet one hiding under the car smile

I wouldnt bother replacing the pre-cats as they are only effective from cold and are there for cold-start MOT's...

I'm not 100% sure how you replace the main CAT but im sure someone on here will know be able to answer that bit. I think ACT do a replacement downpipe where you can swap in and out the CAT.

Either that or find yourself a 'sympathetic' MOT centre.

hope that helps..

regards,

Nick

Has he removed all the cats or just the pre-cats ? There are 3 cats, one in each exhaust manifold (the pre-cats) and the main one in the Y piece (usually called the dustbin). If hes just removed the precats you will be fine, if he's taken out the main Y piece cat then thats possibly a problem.

ACT do a replacement for £750 but its an exchange item, I suspect they would expect to get back the main Y piece with a cat.

They do a brand new system, with racing cats for £1285.

Cats are not cheap !
