Why is this site so slow?? depends how you do it though!

The PH forums are becoming tediously slow to open up, quite often it just hangs and you get nothing. However I have found that rather going direct to the topic in the "whats new" search feature (you can guarantee that'll hang) go to the forum its in, then find the title you spotted in "whats news" & click on the link there. For some reason this seems to be quicker.

Anyone care to explain, I find I can open up Ebay, login & do a quick check before PH finds the link & opens the page up.

Use Opera as your browser - everything's quicker and the "speed dial" feature is sweet

My "trick" on Firefox is right click on item, then open link in new tab.
At least while tab is opening I can carry on reading other items or opening more tabs.

Although I find it goes in stops and starts. Perhaps server A is faster than B?

Has been painfully slow on times this weekend, we get the promises but they seem to be taking their time.
Seen a lot of people suggesting memberships, donations and the like to help fund the servers, but if you take a look at the advertising costs and the number of hits this site gets you soon realise why Haymarket bought the site. Believe me this site is good business and can make them a lot of money, so why arent they pushing to sort the problems out a lot faster than than they have promised?
I'm sure if Ted was still at the helm he would be interested to sort it out as soon as he could as at the time it was his business and life and any problems could seriously have dented his income. Now a corporate is involved they only seem interested in getting more figures via advertising and not addressing the weaknesses those figures have caused.
If a printing press had gone down for one of their paper based publications i bet Haymarket would have taken action a lot sooner.

I know, but these issues have been here since at least mid January? I would trawl all the old threads on the promises the team have made since then but i cant be bothered

Just thought i'd air my views as i have been quiet on the subject and this weekend it has particularly frustrated me on times

Why? Isn't phpBB up to scratch then for large amounts of traffic? It seems ok when I've used other forums and it's certainly easy to get working.

No its not, its a repliction issue, the post is there, its just the server thats handling the viewtopic request isnt seeing it, yet.

if you click your mouse wheel (press down on it if you haven't ever done this before) it will open new tab in background without having to go into the menu

i do this (not just on PH), open up a few things that i want to look at

works in the latest IE as well AFAIK

Aren't some of the problems due to all posts being written to one db and then replicated to (two?) others for reading, and people have problems trying to read stuff that hasn't got there yet? If so, I wonder whether faster / more servers will actually solve it or just mask it for a while.

Do you mean the first post in a multi-post thread or the first post in a thread with only one post rendering a 'Nothing to see here'

If its the former the OP has the ability to remove their own post from a thread leaving the thread and its consequent reponses behind - usually making little sense.

If its the latter its usually caused by replication.
