I sold a bike on E Bay last July, yet i have just received the unpaid road tax fine of £80!!!
I sent the form off, as i have done with every other vehicle, but presumably they never got it.

Hi Thats bad news mate ,your going to have to pay that (Reduced to £40 if you pay now).I had the same problem last year.Spent months trying to sort it out. They will say you should have phoned
them if you didn't recieve a notification of change of ownership
letter.I even produced a bill of sale to prove i didn't own the bike anymore. This stealth Tax is well documented on here.frown

Conversely I wouldn't pay. The Royal Mail loses over 14 million items of post each year and the DVLA, well god only knows rolleyes

Ring them up in the first instance and explain the situation and ask nicely for help. I've yet to fall foul of officialdom thus far and the secret has always been to ask nicely for help. Be exceptionally persistent but polite.

There is a principle at stake here yes

It does seem wrong.
I cannot find a telephone number for this department anywhere.
It is all done by letter it seems.

I had the same problem with a Kawasaki KLR I sold about 2 years previously

Suddenly I get a tax reminder for I bike I sold 2 years ago and the guy must have taxed since.

I Phoned the DVLA and explained the situation and the very nice lady wrote me a letter thanking me for letting them know and that was an end of it.

fight it all the way & even go to court if needed. you sold it, you informed them & have proof to back that up. if they cant keep track of their paperwork its their fault not yours.

Presumably, if you pay the fine, you are admitting to still having an interest in the bike. What happens if next week, the police knock on your door, saying the bike was involved in a major 'incident' a few weeks ago? It's going to be very difficult to prove you no longer own the bike if you're prepared to pay an untaxed fine for it.
