'03 530d engine problem?

Please help: I've got a '03 plate 530d (touring) automatic. Bought 2nd hand a year ago. Great condition and it's been running brilliantly. I now have 74k miles on the clock.
About a month or so ago, I noticed an odd thing. When at very low speeds/revs, say turing around on the drive or edging fowards in a queue of traffic - sometimes the engine makes an odd noise. it's like it's revving harder and being more noisy than it usually is. The rev counter doesn't show anythng odd..although it feels like the engine 'races' very briefly...i.e. makes the noise but doesn't go anywhere. And I'd not necessarily be putting the pedal down at the time, i.e. I could just be keeping constant revs.
There are no other symptoms at all and this doesn't happen all the time...just occasionally. The car is driving normally in every other way.
Anyone have any advice on what that might be a symptom of?
