Friend of mine had a Quaife LSD in his 1600 race Mk1 which seemed to work well (not cheap though !)

They do all sorts of gearbox/drive line stuff - give them a call : http://www.quaife.co.uk/ (01732 741144)

I've had the Quaife ATB on my Corrado (16v turbo) for some time and whilst it helps to maximise traction, you have a lot more torque being produced by the 1.8T engine at much lower engine revs too (and it looks as if it's in a mk1 Golf shell so even less weight). Spinning the front wheels will be very easy in that.

I think ultimately you either practise to temper your natural lsd (ie your right foot and the cheapest option) or perhaps investigate some aftermarket traction control systems (race logic etc) - again not a cheap option thumbup

Take out the gbox, it's got ridiculously short 1st and 2nd gears because of the narrow power band of the TDi engine. A longer 1st will help you out massively.

How about wider & stickier rubber?

Don't know how wide you can go on the front of a Mk1, but my Corrado had 240bhp/250lbft going through 225 section tyres without much of a problem (although no sudden turbo boost to break the tyres away).

Don't use first gear.
Pull away in second.

use the Proxes for normal road driving and get a second set of cheap alloys for the track and put sticky Dunlop/Yoko/Toyo semi slicks on
