hi

in a couple of months the car is going to be 1 year old the age of quesion of is it worth renewing the extended warranty has popped up. what does the warranty cover? if the diff or gearbox start leaking oil/fail will that be covered? if the superchager bearings start making a noise will that be covered? i suppose what i need to know is what isn't covered! lol!

i know the warranty doesn't cover everything but if it doesn't cover(!) much then it isn't worth £1250!

thanks

My view is that Jaguar are very keen to have a new car purchasers repeat custom, therefore the factory 3 year warranty will be very much water tight and cover everything. Extended warranties are for a different kind of owner which Jaguar are really not that interested in. Their business is to make and sell new cars. It is the dealer who sells the used models. Jag cannot simply ignore these customers as they may one day buy new, so they have provided an extended warranty, but it is now covered by a 3rd party company, who's business is to sell warranties to make money, not blow their profits on fixing broke Jags.

My S-Type 4.2 SE was three years old on 31.12.2006 when the Jaguar warranty expired. I decided to extend it for 2 years and the cost was, I think, around £2200 in total. My main reason for doing so was that a number of significant parts had been replaced in the third year and if I did not extend the warranty then those items replaced would not be covered beyond the end of that third year. For example, over the life of the car I've had THREE replacement gearboxes all under warranty and this would not have happened with the third replacement gearbox had I not extended the warranty (I would have needed to cough up for it). The cost of a new gearbox plus labour well exceeds £2200 so I'm "up" financially on that item alone....there has been other items replaced under warranty in the fourth year such as wheel bearings and a new steering column. I have to say I was surprised to learn that if Jaguar replace any parts outside the warranty period then there is no cover whatsoever, although there I will have legal rights about items being fit for purpose etc.

If anyone is interested in my experiences with the gearbox on my car I could start a separate thread on the Jaguar topics site in the PH Forum all about it! I think the ZF 6 speed auto gearbox is really great, when it's working!

interesting comments, i agree that the warranty company is in the business of making money! they will do what they can to get out of paying (wear and tear sir! they all do that Sir!).

yesterday i got a friend (who is a BMW master tec) to give the car the once over. up on ramps the car was given a clean bit of health with only 2 notices of concern and to keep an eye on. First and most important issue is the Diff, it is leaking at the seals not a massive amount but it is leaking. The second issue is the gear box it has a very very small leak from the gearbox sump cover. I suppose the main question is will dealer pick up on the two leaks?! and will the warranty pickup any repair costs? assuming the dealer picks up on the leaks! LOL!

shall i even mention my findings?!

also the idler pully is needs replacing which i've known about for the last couple of months.

Everything else was good, bushes are good, rust underneath is well contained and noted its better than a BMW at 7 years old! but did point put that i should get it treated with waxoil to help protect the underneath., tyres wear evenly, noted very faint furring on the fronts which he said as being quite normal on very large tyres, if it gets worse i should get the laser alignment done and recheck front bushes.

Following my post above and the comments of others, just for the record I've never had any problems getting agreement to warranty work being done, either under the original or extended warranty. Even the JMD I use has been very helpful and taken my side in any discussion. Maybe I've been fortunate (so far!). R.
