Taxed the car at the begining of the month and was only charged £160 odd for 6 mths... is that right for a 2006 VXR Monaro...?

It apparently goes on emissions etc...I've just paid 205 for 12 months for my 04CV8. Use this link http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/forms/v149.pdf & it appears you've paid the right amount!

As an ex/non smoker I have this train of thought - the Government will NOT allow the loss of revenue from tobacco products to go un-noticed. Therefore, they have to find a way of subsidising that loss by increasing tax on........the driver! Road tax, petrol, insurance, servicing...to name but a few, will go on increasing in price until we're ALL on hydrogen cars (example!) then they will find a way to tax that, to cover the loss of revenue! The government are taxing people into poverty, in my opinion. soapbox End of rant, sorry!

When does it go up to £400 for band G. My tax is up at end of May and I'm trying to work out if I should renew early to avoid paying the extra £100?

I asked the "when" question on the budget thread - had my renewal through for 1 Apr and they're "offering" it to me at £300 when I expected it to be £400.

I'm not sure whether you can get away with saving by taxing it early though - they're probably wise to that.

I don't think that you can re-tax a car before the 15th of the month before the tax falls due. If it goes up, you have to pay the full amount regardless of what is on the reminder. Sorry, but what else do you expect from this goverment. They would tax sh*%**g if they could find a way to do it!

You can tax it earlier than the 15th, but it's entirely at the discression of the DVLA or DVLNI (while it still exists) whether or not they entertain your request - it also comes down to whether or not they have received the disks for the next period coming up when you request one...

I was heading out of the country for a couple of months and had to tax mine the month after I left, I made some enquiries at the front desk of the local DVLNI office in L'derry, and they then gave me contact info of a manager in the main office in Coleraine, I told them my reasons for needing the early tax and at that time they only had the 6 month disks available for the following month, but the day that I drove up to take the 6 months one the new yearlies appeared so I was able to get that instead smile

I only smiled as the car would have been in use with no tax otherwise which would have been frowned upon by the fuzzio on either side of the English channel biggrin

Everyone will be pleased to know they'll need to pay £440 from next year now. Great.

It's £440 if you buy the tax every 6 months otherwise it's £400

The way it is reported the new scales seem to apply to ALL cars of any age.

Is there no 'first registration date' differential anymore ?

Looks like it applies to all cars registered after 2001.

I think that's just for the first year on a brand new car - effectively an extra purchase tax.
