3200 GT indie running costs (yes again)
Discussion
I know this question has been asked loads of times but I want to get a clear answer as reading through past posts is a little bit contradictory.
3200 GT are expensive to run, but what is running an older one like using an independent for say 5K a year max, no short runs as a second car.
Would the following be a fair assessment?
Insurance £1500
Servicing £800
Parts £800
Bearing in mind its low usage is this possible, or am I really looking at £5K a year?

Unless you're very young or have loads of points you have over egged the insurance. I pay £500 for 3k limited mileage pa as a modern classic with michael wards agreed value.
5k miles is one service pa, minor £600ish (main dealer) major £1000 ish (again MD). belts at 32k - £1500ish when done with a service. Chains at 64k (£ouch). In my experience indies are not that much cheaper than main dealers and peace of mind goes a long way towards joy of ownership.
Parts are exspensive but its a modern car and they dont fall apart like the early 90's massers (so i'm told).
There are plenty of scare mongers out there who don't own, have never owned, and will never own one, that will tell you that they are a money pit. Total bo**ocks. Yes they are more than a fiesta to run, but they a whole lot more car and a whole lot faster than a fiesta.
There has been some discussions over crank end float on the manuals but as mine is auto i cant really give you truthful details on that.
Suffice to say, I have had mine for 7 years from 4k miles (now 37k) and my costs have not come close to the figures you suggest, sure little niggles have occured but it wouldn't be Italian if they didn't. All part of the ownership joys.
Just because apart fails it doesn't mean that you have to buy a new unit, they are only chunks of assembled engineering which (mostly) can be unassembled and fixed.

Your insurance is about double the likely cost at worst - I commute in mine and it lives outside and I pay under £700 - I'm 33.
Running costs? I disagree with the other poster, I've used various independents and the labour rate can be a lot cheaper - I pay from £40 p/h for a good honest job to £60+VAT p/h if I want glossy pics of the work and a free valet.
Regular servicing won't blow your budget, Roberts Aerospace quotes £300 for a 6k oil service, £430 for a 12k service, £549 for a cambelt (3 years or 18k), and bear in mind that the factory guidelines are 12k oil intervals and 3 year 36k belt intervals, so the 6k service is precautionary.
BUT.
Beware of:
68k cam chain service - £2k Lots of cars for sale around this time, many owners ignore it, but rather bravely.
Rear crank main seal - £700, early ones blow out and then leak.
Exhaust boxes - £600 min
Clutch - £1,000 ish
Shocks - £500 each
Brakes - £500 - £1,000 depending on the state of the discs and handbrake
Now you would be really unlucky to have all of these in any one year, but some years will be dearer than others. Try and find a car that has some of the above done, I didn't, but I bought cheaply and got to oversee the work as it was done - swings and roundabouts!
I've done a cambelt service, a short service, one leaky shock, a rear crank main seal, brakes and exhausts in the last 18 months. I use it daily though and have done around 12k in it.
Oh and don't forget tyres, £300 for a pair of rears every 6-9k depending on the weight of your wellies!
Fantastic cars, I recommend the idea. There's a very cheap one in the classifieds btw....ahem...

When they run well they are great, but as the miles crank up the bills will pile in. Mine has just breached the 40K milestone and has all of sudden neaded a new starting motor, a new throttle body, new rear boxes on the exhaust quite apart from the usual servicing and care and attention, and just for good measure a tappet has just started making a racket needing some manual intervention.
I came from 14 years of Porsche ownership, and Maserati ownership has been an expensive proposition, but one that I love!
