Decent restaurants in Le Mans?

Anyone know of any good quality restaurants in the city centre or surrounding area? I’ve managed to find several good eateries in the 20-30 EUR range with average local wines but I fancy going for a full 5 courses and a decent wine list at least one night this year. I did find one restaurant last year that I can’t remember the name of but it was already booked for a function. I guess that would be the case for a lot of them. I’m not looking for Michelin stars but something a cut above the standard fixed “race-weekend menu” town centre brassieres would be nice. Don’t really want to have to drive out of town because I’d like a drink, and I guess taxis on race weekend are a non-starter. Any ideas?

Best night for dinner in LM would be Sunday but I can't help you on restuarant names. Never made a note of any I've been to. They were a means to an end.

Gary, Depends on what you call decent and how much you want to pay. My son and I usually have a quality meal on the Sunday evening, and we usually head to the Old Town of Le Mans where there are a number of good restaurants, although not all are open on Sunday evening. I can recommend in the Old Town La Chamade ([phone]), Le Auberge de 7 Plats, and Patagruel. Also La Mendigotte at Hotel Levasseur on Boulevard Renee Levasseur, off Place de La Republic, ([phone]) is good. I suggest that you have a look at these on Friday and then book that day for the Sunday evening.

There is the Auberge des Matfeux just on the left going south out of Arnage

There is another, although I can't remember the name.
It is in Ruaudin on the D142, head south on the Mulsanne straight,
half way do a left at the roundabout, that takes you to Ruaudin

None of them are the cheepest but you did say you want a GOOD meal

We had a great meal, wine and Brandy ect at 'Le Belinois' Its location is Rte du Lude - 72230 Monce-en-Belin Tel [phone]. The location of this village resturant is south of Arnage on the D307 Not the cheapest but Bloody good One tip though, If your in a bit of a rush dont go there! However the food is great.

Cheers for the tips folks. I think 70-100 EUR per person including booze is about what I'm looking at. Auberge des 7 Plats looks good. I think Le Beaulieu is the one I tried to get into last year but was booked for a function. I'm away on Sunday so I'll chance my arm on Thursday night

Also a restaurant called something like the Le Mans 24 hours. Its done up inside with all racing gear, including a motorbike as a table. They also have a menu printed in English but not much of a help as non speak English lol, good atmosphere and good food.
Sundays I always find is a dead loss as most are closed.

We have been doing the Le Mans pilgrimage every year without fail for many years; I know a few restaurants in the old part of the town. Maybe you could try "La Taverne du Maitre Kanter" right in the centre of town on the Place des Jacobins (where the friday Parade des Pilotes takes place). There is a large car park opposite, so you can normally keep an eye for your treasured car. Unlike many other eateries in France, this one stays opens 7 days/week from noon to midnight. Try the village of Fille its about 2 K from Arnage

2 decent resturants in a nice village on the river, one is right on the river forget what its called & the other is off to the right as you come into the village Auberge du Ralle
