Timing Chain ? Nope. Valve Gear ? Nope.

Hey guys my engine rattle has been identified. It's not the timing chain, phew. It's not the valve gear, wonderful ! It only needs a complete engine re-build hoora.........?! I feel sick.

So what was it? (and bad luck!!!!)

Richard at RT reckons it could be a big or small end. Either way it's major surgery time. Judging by the sound it was making I would say it was a small end. In any case when it comes back it should have a tip top motor.

Well, not nice that's for sure, sort of a hollow tapping obviously increasing with revs and load but mostly quiet at idle.

So why can you not just have a crank-regrind and new bearings? Still pretty major but the rest of the engine would not have to be touched unless there is wear there also?

At least on a conventional V8 unless the AJP engine is different in some ways?
