Hi all,
Bought a couple of uj's for my steering and i want to fit a gaitor over the joints to protect them from the crap of the wheel.
Do you buy 2 small ones or 1 large one?
I assume you tie wrap them on.

i have just done the upper one, i used a universal cv joint gater, it depends on what size joint you have i suppose i used a stainless jubilee clip just in front of the gater to stop it moving down as the cable ties didnt work for me, been on a week now and the greased joint is clean as a whistle, looks ok too

Generic steering rack end gaiters are just the right size to slip over the UJs and come in pairs so you have one for each UJ. A cable tie to close off the big end and you're sorted.

FWIW Be careful here in that sometimes unless the fit is tight, boots can trap water/dirt & increase the level of wear on the joint.

Think along the lines of why they didn't fit them as o/e?

Because they were lazy, or not concerned about the life expectancy of the steering UJ.

The main function of the boot is to keep the exhaust heat away, the second function is to keep the worst of the road muck out. It doesn't need to be hermetically sealed and there's no way it is going to accumulate enough dirt or water inside to cause a problem.

In practice it increases the life of the upper UJ by about a factor of ten.

Carried out the work this weekend took about a hour and half.
Bought a pair of steering gaiters £6 cut 2 ribs of one end to fit over knuckle other end slips over shaft.
Once realigned tigtened up bolts then slipped gaiter over joints and tie wrapped shaft end.
A great fit looks tidy and room for links to rotate in the gaiter.
Top link was quiet tight not as loose as new part bottom link was about the same but replaced anyway.
Not road tested yet due to flat battery and this morning it's raining.
Dry tommorow so will take it to work then hopefully improved steering.
