Bravo. clap

What sort fo things are you covering? In a few weeks you'll start to be able to plunder the various online tab sites for some songs.

The Cure are a little before my time, but I grew up playing Nirvana. Let's see what we can find....

Polly: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/nirvana/poll... (Nice and easy, you could use open chords just as well)

Ok, it's hardly unplugged, but Smells Like Teen Spirit is about as frenzied as you can get with 4 chords! http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/nirvana/smel...

The Man Who Sold The World has some easy lead lines and the chords are down the bottom: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/nirvana/the_...

Lithium: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/nirvana/lith... (hover your mouse over the chord name to see a diagram if you're unsure)

In fact, why not check out the whole album : http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/n/nirvana/unpl... Some of these songs should be played with alternative tunings, dunno whether they're tabbed correctly, but worth a look.

You get the idea... Some people find different aspects of playing more challenging, but most of the nirvana songs are fairly straightforward. Pick one that you really like and play the bits you can play. Even if you can only pick up the chorus it'll probably be more fun than doing scales out of a book.

I'm slowly trying to get back into learning a little guitar, although mainly so that I can help an ex girlfriends son get into the game.

Getting sore fingers is, as everyone has said, a rite of passage.

I only started learning a month ago but I can't get the hang of barre chords. I just can't seem to press the strings down hard enough to make the chord sound right. Also I'm having trouble stretching for some of the chords.

But I've got hard finger ends now!!

It does take time. Also, Barre chords are easier on electrics, or guitars with light strings and a low action. Stick with it, it will come.

Don't worry too much about learning a particular chord or scale. Just play as much of your favourite song as you can, as loud as you can. wink

I think conciously trying to learn something can sometimes be less productive than just relaxing and throwing yourself into it.

i had an electric to start with but it kept going out of tune, plus setting it up was a pain, so i got rid of it and bought a yamaha acoustic which is so much harder to play, the strings feel tighter and they are higher off the fret board too. It sounds great and stays in tune for ages but i'm really struggling with it. how do i lower the strings/reduce the tension on them?

The easiest way I can think of is to use thinner strings, these operate at lower tension than their thicker counterparts.

As for the action (string height) most electric guitars allow you to adjust this, but I suspect with an acoustic you're stuck with it.
