If it's pre March 2001 then £185, otherwise £445.

Been like that since they brought in banding.

Pre March 2001 is assessed on capacity. 3000cc+ is £185 a year.

Only if registered on or before 23-03-06

www.directgov.cartax explains the lot, and as I doubt if any e39 M5's were registered after 2004

Correct.

In the immortal words of the Sex Pistols, "Ever feel like you've been swindled......?"

To be clear.

If your M5 was registered BEFORE MARCH 2001 then it will be £185 a year.

If your M5 was registered AFTER MARCH 2001 then it will be £445 a year.

Sorry.

Balls.

Such a high tax, and assuming it doesn't go up further (which it will), this may well lead to many cars getting scrapped when they hit about 15 years old. Many of us enthusiasts would keep them going even if they were worth nothing, but I can see many just getting binned as £500 a year on a <1k car may not add up...

I think thats what they're hoping people will do.

I console myself by thinking that the way inflation is going (note, the way its feel like its going, not the "official" goverment stats), a loaf of bread will be £4, so £445 of tax wont be the end of the world. Thing is, average wasges will need to be £165k.

the fact they've done this retrospectively is criminal. Surely there's a breach of human rights or something in there?

You're not a one legged lesbian black freedom fighter. You have no rights in the UK any more.
