If it’s any consolation they have just f
ked up our phone lines this morning. We now have 2 different “groups” of lines and if anybody calls our main line we can’t pick it up without physically running over to the phone and then we can’t transfer the call internally. It is not great for productive business when people are having to leg it aound with note pads to take incoming calls becasue they can't get them at their desks.
BT are also blaming an “admin error in India” for this one. Why the f
k is it anything to do with India? They’re called British (f
king incompetent) Telecom.

They are a complete bunch of muppets at BT. If you think you will get some sort of compensation for lost business, I guarantee you won't. The best they'll offer is a month or two of free line rental (or some such).
If I were you I'd call that number every hour until it's sorted.
I know of a couple of businesses who have. One didnt have any connection for 10 days. Both had to go the legal route though and one was settled a day or so before it going to court. If I were you I'd call that number every hour until it's sorted.

I can foresee a problem with proving actual loss, if this was to get as far as court. How do you quantify loss when, in reality, at best it's presumably going to be loss of a chance to sell to someone making a speculative sales call. I suspect that's probably what puts most people off claiming in these circumstances. That and there's doubtless some form of weasel words exclusion of liability clause hidden deep in BT's standard T&Cs....

I'll wager it will be some free line rental for a few weeks/months. If I were you I'd work out how many calls your direct mail campaign (and other) would normally generate (which you obviously didn't get), calculate the conversion rate from call to order, factor in the average sized order times the number of orders lost multiplied by the gross margin on each order. Then add a bit more for customers you've lost who would have become long-term clients.
Then, after the above, they'll still offer you some free line rental!
