Hi all,

Myself and Mrs Mahju are planning a week in Scotland at the end of the month, driving around on what hopefully be windy open roads that lead me to wonderful whiskey distilleries...

Its a pretty vauge idea at the moment, the Isle of Skye will feature (as waaaay back before my family got on a boat to a land full of bread nickers they came from there), but apart from that no big plans yet.

Just wondering if any of you peeps have been there, and there's roads you know that I should drive or avoid.

Thanks,
-Matt

A82 through Glen Coe is a must. You can follow it up to Kyle of Lochalsh (spl) where the bridge crosses to Skye but the A830 that leads to Mallaig where the Ferry crossing is, is even better. Unclassified road between Applecross and Tompapress is also a great drive.

Further South, in the borders, seek out the A701.

Mr Westy is spot on, The roads he mentioned are a must, I went to Plockton as well, it's kind of on the way from Sky to Applecross.

Off the A87 to Plockton then on the A90 near Stromferry (No Ferry) to Applecross. driving If you want Whisky, The other side of Loch Ness are many distilleries. I like Glenfarclasslick

I think that's the road Mrs T and I took a few years ago in the Jag. I couldn't get the wheel of Mrs Tdriving
I think one of the roads around Loch Ness is pretty good too and I'd have thought reasonalbly quiet at this time of year. Somewhere I've a piccy of Mrs T with the speedo showing *****!!
along one of Scotlands many magnificent driving roads.

Got to take "The Road To The Isles" which is the road from Fort William to Mallaig and then get the ferry over to Skye. The roads on Syke are amazing and if you get it right, there is virtually no one around! Fond memories of blasting up the road towards Slygachin, blue skys, not a soul about! Fantastic! Other great roads have been mentioned such as the A82 up through Glencoe. Also follow it all the way up the side of Loch Ness.
I always read the threads in the Roads sections of all these people traversing half of Europe to get to the Alps. Scotland is on our doorstep and the roads are incredible! As for the scenery!

http://www.stevecarter.com/picaday/roads.htm - all these were around Applecross, Skye & Western Scotland. You'll have a ball, another PHer, 'northo' who runs a prestige veh. company, is compiling some of the best Scottish routes and sticking them on a Google Earth overlay - you need to PM him for it - the thread is: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

A thread on Applecross: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

There is a Scotlandish hoon on the 19th April for interest.

A

Oh - 'Dukes Pass' between Aberfoyle and somewhere is to be recommended, West side of Loch Lomond, Glen Coe...spoilt for choice!

And in their natural habitat...

(Thanx 'woooooody')

I'm not 100% sure what you mean about the A68, I would say that it is a great road until you get to the border. After that the scameras spoil it. The A697 (which eventually joins the A68) is as good, if not better. The A1 is best avoided unless you're in a hurry.

Visit these places every year, either in a hire car or the Omega. Wish I could just click my fingers and be up there in the Elise. No matter how desperate I am to drive those roads in the elise, I just cannot face the journey from London up there. I'd be deaf, crippled, and high on exhaust fumes.....

POOF!wink
I did it last year form Poole to Blackpool then next day to Drumnadrochit, near Inverness. The return journey to Poole I did in one day, left Drum at 10.00 and got home at 22:00 after several stops for grub etc.

On the subject of the A82, it's good up until you get near Loch Ness, but if you are going to Inverness, you are better going up the eastern side of the loch, as the A82 along Loch Ness is far far too busy to be any fun.
The route mentioned previously from Fort William to Mallaig and then on to Sky, Kyle Of Lochalsh, Applecross, would be my choice. The east side of loch Ness and the whisky distillaries later.
Have fun. driving
Oh! never go on the M8 through Glasgow, it's a car park, I would have got home hours earlier if I had not used it.

Got to agree with FW. Still, a man in uniform should have no shortage of boyfriendswink
I did Plymouth - Manchester and back on Thursday. Total distance of 560 miles. Two breaks (one each way) for a quick cuppa. That was in my S1 on 400/475 Nitrons with a C/R box.
