I can't afford anything too new but I want an E46 M3 with average mileage for it's age and a FSH Preferably I'd also like some sort of protection (warranty) if anything big goes wrong.

So, do I go to a dealer and pay extra for peace of mind (if that's really what I would get) or take a bit of a chance and buy privately? Are there any other alternatives to these two?

As my budget really has to £20k maximum and there doesn't seem to be much choice in the dealer network at this price, do I have a choice at all?

Are there any specialists out there who could look at a car advertised privately and make sure I wasn't getting a lemon? I know HPI and service history is something I could check, but someone with real experience would know exactly what to look at.

What would you do? Advice from the M experts out there please!

I bought my M3 privately due to it being a much cheaper alternative. You just need to make sure the person you're buying from doesn't seem like an idiot and has looked after the car well. Make sure it has had the running in check done and has full BMW service history. You can't go too wrong in that case. I am selling my M3 Convertible for £19,000. It's a Black with black interior, uprgaded alloys and all the usual extras. It's immaculate with only 36,000 miles on the clock. Give me a call or look up my advertisement for extra photos etc. I am based in suffolk. My number is 07901528051 or email is connect_to_oz@hotmail.com
