Are there any jobs where I can do 6 months on/6 months off?
Discussion
I'd love to be able to work from October to March when it's cold and dark so I'm out of the house not consuming large quantities of my own gas and electricity, and be off work from April to September when I could spend my time enjoying the warmer, lighter weather and pursuing various ventures that I'm currently stalling on because I don't have enough free time. I would need to earn at least £20k during the six months I was at work in order to get through the whole year. Is there anything that I could train for in a reasonably short space of time that would offer this type of working arrangement? I realise it would probable be something freelance, I don't have a problem with that.
Contracting. It's what a chum of mine does - but then he's in Telecomm. Engineering and it pays reasonably well in the field he's in. Having said that though, missus has recently had a sprog and he's not sure he wants to have a break for a while, wants to build up a bit of a slush fund and he's having an extension put on the house - but it is a viable option.
Friend of mine earns £20k per season as a private Ski Instructor (apparently taught Hugh Grant) - she's been do it for 10 years - managed to buy her flat in Chamonix - which she rents out in winter (for stupid amounts)and then works as a kite surf instructor in the summer - good life!

Ski industry?
Not if you want to earn any decent amount of money. Tends to be six months skiing then six months watersports/golf/trekking/mountain bike guiding. Great way to live though.I guess these have already been mentioned, but the oil industry (which pays nicely too) and the merchant navy are possibilities. I know people in both and they seem to have a good laugh.

that's weeks on, weeks off ... not months, AFAIK.Get yourself over to Fort Lauderdale in Florida. You can earn yourself plenty of $'s working on the charter boats cruising round the Bahamas and the Carribean. I used to do it. You spend between three to four weeks on each trip. Lots of wealthy Americans chartering boats for their annual holidays, fishing etc.
It is hard graft (relatively speaking), if one of the chartees wants a cup of tea (whatever) at 4AM then that's your job etc etc. You are at their beck and call 24/7, quite knackering at times.
I had a great time doing it though. The most I earned on one trip was $24,000 Dollars. $20,000 wages and $4,000 tip. It is a cool way to see the world and you get to meet some interesting people.
