I am determined to have a reliable Ultima (??) and guessing that the most likely cause of breakdown is the MSD ignition.

Is there a more reliable system than the MSD? (apart from the one that needs an LS 7 attached to it........ )

Hey Stuart, have you had probs with them or is your concern from research?

Mine is 11k old now an no issues. They are moounted low in the engine bay so stay pretty cool. What's the craic?

It's a sort of preventative maintenance thing.

Searching this site, chatting to a couple of tuners etc leads me to believe the most common need for the AA truck is MSD death. Considering the squillions of these units in service it seems to me Ultima drivers suffer disproportionate levels of failure.

The car's going to be used to lots of trackdays so I know I have to get a dry sump on it double quick and in the same way I just want to try and predict which other bits are going to go wrong ( replace nasty v-belts with modern multi-V system?)

Agreed: As I have said before Motec on my R5 Turbo for 8 years no problems. Motec on the LS in the GTR EVERYTHING works straight out of the box. If you use an LS without the need for sequencail or electric throttel Motec has a realitivly cheap box for the LS series

I have used a Petronix Flamethrower street/strip HEI on my SB. Easy to install and setup and been no problem despite been doused in fuel/coolant/oil/water and no doubt got pretty hot.

We used the Hi-6 from Crane Cams and mounted it inside the cab against the bulkhead behind the driver's seat.

Reliable and inexpensive.

Thanks for the ignition thoughts. I was guessing that overheating the 6AL from the headers was mostly to blame but I see that the Cobra blokes suffer a bit as well - their engine bay must be cooler(?)

Having had many years of wonderous reliability from Scoobs and Evos, going back in time to something with a distributor and a barstering carb makes me nervous .....
