How much are import taxes and charges when bringing a car over from Japan?

Looking at importing an MR2 turbo and I'm trying to work out from my budget what sort of FOB price I can afford in Japan before adding the costs once it gets to the UK

Cheers

Sam

You are looking at 17.5% vat and 10% duty on the value of the car. Plus shipping costs of around £600 for a MR2. Your clearing agent will probably charge you around £100 for clearing the car.

As above, 10% customs duty on the car, then 17.5% VAT on the car and the customs duty. You'll usually need to pay a handling fee in Japan for your contact at that end to get the car to a Japanese port too, around £500. I would have thought shipping would be around £300 - £400 on something the size of an MR2.

The exchange rate's awful at the moment though, so unless you've found a particularly cheap car it might be worth biding your time.

I see what you mean:

I'm waiting on some quotes back from importers, it just seems that the cars in the UK are either overpriced, too modded or have too many miles.

Its going to be my first RWD car, so I want it standard, and I intend to keep it a good few years and as such I want something with as low mileage as possible.

Well, the graph's accurate but you get a better picture when you look at a slightly longer term. It was pushing 250 yen to the pound at one point, it's barely 200 these days.

Of course you can save yourself a fair bit of money by cutting out the importer - just deal direct with whoever's selling the car you want in Japan.

Best of luck with the search, it's worth waiting to find the right car.
