Had a very cold and windy day today assissted by my wonderfully skilled bro, got the de-cats on and POR15' the chassis, which mostly was in surprisingly good condition, a good scrape and polish revealed only one small hole at the OSF corner by the jacking point which was promptly welded and sealed. Well chuffed with a good days work.
.....And the noise from the decats....OMFG, id read a couple of threads which suggested id not get much difference but bloody hell it sounds fantastic, completely different to our ears anyway.....U gotta love it!

I'm pleased the chassis was OK. I spent about half an hour crawling around on the garage floor under the car stabbing at it with a screwdriver to convince myself it was OK a month after I bought it. Must have missed the hole but I had no way to lift up the car to give it a closer look. I was convinced it was pretty solid though.

Sounds like you have better resources to hand than me too. The car definitely deserves you.

Cheers mate, the location of the hole may be worth noting to anybody else doing chassis work actually. As you said the rest of it was top notch. The hole was on the top of the chassis rail which runs across from the osf wheel, next to the jack point, with the wheel removed obviously. There was 10 years of road crap on top of it which had to be removed with a screwdriver to reveal it. We had all the wheels off to clean and coat all the suspension bits too.
Top stuff that POR15 however the warning about it not coming off your skin once dry is unfortunately true.....im covered.

Tell me about it. I got it all over my face, and even after taking nitro-mors to my cheeks, I still had to go to work with grey crap all over my face. Not a good look.

I can't believe there's a thread somewhere saying there's not much difference between catted and non catted.

My car's gone from 106db to 114db

Dread to think what mine would be, its been measured at 117.5 by 2 different meters months apart and that is with the cats on...

Tempted to find out though, for a short while anyway

Yeah, that POR-15 stuff is deadly on skin but it's everything that people used to think Hammerite was. It sticks to your chassis almost as good as _decent_ powdercoat... and much better than the crappy powdercoat TVR used.

I think most of those threads are more of the subjective "what does it sound like" rather than "Has anyone measured". From inside my car, the noticable difference was on hard acceleration, otherwise I would have subjectively said that the sound had changed pitch a little but not much else.

Of course, if you were standing behind the car, or had a dB meter, you'd comment differently!

After driving it a bit more with the decats on ive noticed that drivability seems a little better for some reason, less jerky around 2000 revs and somewhat smoother? may be a coincidence or how its mapped but its definately different.
Also swapped the battery today for the Optima Redtop, a job in itself but not as bad as some make out i have to say. Also swapped the wipers for some curved ones with a decent spray pattern which are a bit better, now its used in all weather!
A little point with the wipers in that they dont park correctly on intermittant, which, however amusing it is, ive decided to rectify with a park sensor from clever trevor.
Id forgotten how much i enjoyed tinkering with cars, the fact its a TVR Cerbera just adds to the enjoyment! and the look on peoples faces when i overtake them, their cars visibly shaking from the decatted monster is priceless evil

It was mapped with the decats on. I'm not sure the cats offer any significant constriction but the decats have the link-pipe which definitely has an effect on overall power and the shape of the torque curve, so it's conceiveable that the ever immeasureable "driveability" is improved too.

Not parking again? They were like that when I bought it, so I replaced the parking switch myself. Can't remember where from but the job was a total bd to do. I didn't want to remove the header tank so had to prop it up out of the way with one hand while I fumbled round the back of the wiper motor to remove the old parking switch and replace with the new one.

It's possible that the issue isn't with the parking sensor then I suppose.

It stopped after I replaced the sensor again, but at the same time there was a fuse blown which stopped the clock working, and (I think) sidelights. After I replaced that fuse, the wipers started parking again, and I put it out of my mind.

It's a real arse to get to the wiper motor Loz. I've never lost so much skin working on a car than when I replaced that sensor.

Oh yes. yes It's even better when you get that reaction overtaking some seriously fast car too. Do it to a high-powered Evo owner. Blow their doors off and they will positively st themselves because being overtaken is the last thing they ever expect will happen to them.

Such fun. smile

yes Spot on reference the way it was mapped with the Linked Decat pipes on, silky smooth power and torque curve. Decatted it makes a sound like no other Cerb I've heard, the change in pitch at approx 3500rpm is spine tingling.......

hehe It was the same for me. In the end I just put Rainx on the screen and it worked brilliantly, to a point where I drove without the wipers for nearly a year. It never irritated me and was about the only niggle I didn't try again to sort out.

Hi All

In order to do a dB test properly, how far does the meter need to be from the exhausts and at what angle?

Have I read 45 degrees at 1 meter somewhere?

Also at what revs should the reading be taken?

I've got access to a dB meter this weekend and just wanted to know how to take readings from a car exhaust system properly.

Regards
Simon

This is the way I measured the noise level on my old Cerb.

Take a measurement at idle, then say 3k rpm, 5k rpm and 7k rpm.....you have to hold the meter there for a while for it to register, although it can be set to record the paek level. Things that can impact on the noise level are if the reading is taken inside a building (where reverberation may give a false reading), so best to do it in the open.

Jules.

I thought its unique sound was because the tailpipes were tapered like a trumpet. smokin
