MR2 Turbo - how quick? Change of plan
Discussion
as the question - how quick and more importantly how quick can you make them?
the reason i ask is a change of plan - was going to ditch my BMW in favour of an R33 GTR skyline but the robbing dealers want my car (i paid 20k for 6 months ago) and 2k cash, for theirs (they will sell me the skyline for 13.5k reduced from 16.5k, the reason for the 2k cash is to clear the finance on the beemer.
Should i just go for it on the skyline and to hell with the finance or keep the beemer and get an MR2 Turbo or similarly quick car for around 3k

hi Stu, havent seen it as its in Manchester right now at an Aston Martin dealers!!, its on autotrader at the moment, would prefer a skyline but cannot afford 2 run one daily and couldnt afford to do this deal (the 2k to pay off my car is the killer) and buy the GTR as it works out £395 a month for 4 years!
So the best bet for me is to get a cheap fast car hence the MR2 question for around 3k, any ideas?

errr very quick, but like all things, you can do it on the cheap, or spend money and do it properly.
It has a lot more sense of "occaision" than almost any other similar jap car though, simply because a tuned one has a high-power 2L turbo engine about 3 inches behind your head, feels like a proper sports car. I definitely found it more exciting than a tuned S14, or even an Evo.
personally, if you just want to feel like you are driving a rocket, why not a turbo mx5?

i've always liked the look of them, mild bodywork to make them a little more agressive looking, not the 355 replica s
te you see or the veilside esq hooooge winged mobiles.
i see from the classifieds here that 3k gets a reasonable one, i guess as they're toyota's they are ok for reliability too

I'm looking at one for my next car. They can be made very quick from what i've read on the oc website.
The stock ecu has maps upto 18psi, and 350hp is a matter of exhaust, air filter, slightly larger injectors/turbo and an aftermarket ecu.
You can get power fc's for them or even better link do a plugin for nearly the same money.

Read this earlier. http://www.mr2dc.com/buyGuideImports.aspx?navSecti...
Seems that the MR2T engine is the same one as in the Celica GT-Four - and thus a known entity.
Which makes me quite tempted by one myself... although finding a turbo that hasn't been fvcked about with by Kevin or Abdul is slightly more difficult...

If you're planning to go as high as 350bhp you'll be well advised to ditch the standard intercooler. The stock ecu has maps upto 18psi, and 350hp is a matter of exhaust, air filter, slightly larger injectors/turbo and an aftermarket ecu.

I would recommend anyone planning to get an MR2 to spend time on these owners club sites
http://www.mr2oc.co.uk/
and
http://www.imoc.co.uk/
both have lots of very knowledgeable people who are willing to offer advice and help.
Invest time in looking for the right car. It's all too easy to buy a money pit! £3k should net you a decent Rev 3.

Yep I have been on their sites. I dont plan to take the car that far, to be honest the stock performance will be more than enough for me, I may just add exhaust, induction and a BOV for some noise but other than that the car will be stock.
All that has been done to mine is induction, exhaust, reduced ride height (-40mm), 17" wheels.Suits me fine and I have no problem at all keeping up with those who have 50-100bhp more than me!
The engine is pretty much bullet proof if you resist the urge to go for big numbers.
Aftermarket BOVs sound cool but they're actually less efficient than the standard recirc!
Yeah the BOV is a maybe, some induction and exhaust noise are a must though
I'm trying to scrape together some extra funds as I've been found a freshly imported low mile 1997 rev4 GT for decent money. Only mod is a catback exhaust. Perfect.
Anyone wanna lend me a grand?
Out of interest what are you paying insurance wise? I've been quoted £550 FC from A-Plan, I'm 27 and have 5 yrs NCB, no-one else I've tried could get within £100 of their quote.

£420 FC including Class 1 business use for me + Mrs RD.Not bad considering she wrote off our other car in the summer of 2006!

just out of interest how much is it?Awesome cars - get a rev 3 with LSD, don't even bother with a rev1/2. I have had mine for about six months and am having a blast, with a few aftermarket parts you can easily see 300+bhp and the insurance and running costs won't bleed you dry.
