Are there any crucial differences between the basic and premium verions, other than the size of the HDD?

GT5 is looming and my wallet is twitching!

You can get the 40gig one, and you can't get the 60gig in the shops one any more.

40gig isn't PS2 compatible, has less USB ports, and doesn't play SACD. But you can buy them new.

You've got a year beforee we get GT5 over in the UK, Japan gets it in December.
Plus I've not met a person yet who plays previous gen games on a next gen console, 40 Gb is fine and what do you want mmore usb ports for?

I'm using 2 ports to charge the 2 controllers.

I have a large media drive which is USB - no free sockets.

USB Keyboard and mouse? - no free sockets.

And if I (for some reason) wanted to add an eyetoy (no) - no free sockets.

Singstar Mics for the Mrs... you get the picture.

Oh and no card reader, no great loss.

I think you can add a hub, but my X360 has a USB in the back (presumably for the bolt-on HD-DVD doorstop) and it's a cleaner solution.

Yes, you can add a hub.
A moore attractive solution is to get one of the many charging stations for the controllers, use a bluetooth keyboard and mouse, then you won't be using either of the USB ports.
Or, for the cheaper option, buy a USB hub for a fiver, run it round the back of the PS3, and keep all the cables bar one out of the way that way. So only microscopically less 'clean'.
I've got a card reader plugged into the USB hub, not had any problems with it, but not used it a huge amount.

The complete GT5 is coming out either at the end of the year or the start of the next.

GT5 Prologue is coming out at the end of next week for £20, and will include 16 player online.

Absolutely can't wait.
