They are amazing little cars.

There is a thread here that I started when I resurrected my mates GTti that he's had from new: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

More info here: http://members.aol.com/Pocketrocket993/index.html

and here: http://www.daihard.org/

Be warned though, they need regular care and maintenence and must be run on expensive fully synthetic oils and regular oil changes at less than 3000 miles are a must!

The smile it puts on your face is incredible but it would be easy to lose your license.

If you can find an original one they're great. If you do find an original one and you pimp it, I'll cut your balls off! smile

Hey Luke, Sam here who you were e-mailing about the GTxx wink

As TT said they do need regular maintenance but will take a kicking so long as you keep up the oil and filter changes. They love to rev.

If you find a nice rust free one get it undersealed to keep it free of the tinworm.

The engines are forged as standard so will take whatever you can throw at them so long as the mapping is correct. Avoid Fuel Cut Defenders as they are no matter what anyone says the biggest killer of the engines.

I had a new GTTi back 89, a white one, F124TSX. Great wee car, did 36,000 in three years, it was faultless. I wonder if it's still out there?

USED to. After a bunch of idiots were messing about they ended it. No more Jap meets at Ace frown They might start it up again in the future but I'm not sure.

Depending on where you are there are a few. If you're anywhere near Exeter, on the 1st sunday of the month the Ultimate Jap Car Club meets at Exeter services. The SXOC and SOC (200sx's and Skylines if you don't know the clubs) local members usually put in an appearence there too. Possibly the GT4oc and Civics too.

It was starting to get a bit silly when I was still going, idiots donutting around the roundabout, bikes doing burnouts, and far too many people around. I remember also a white R5GTT would turn up most times and do laps of the road outside waiting for people to drive up the road so he could try and race them.

I remember seeing a video of a tw@ in a Civic doing a reverse burnout too, so I'm not surprised they pulled it.

Already started again under the Autobmc saturdays. Far better as a day meet as well

My mum had one and I learned to drive in it, absolutely fantastic car! I bought one a few years later and still loved it, the little 3 pot motor sounded great and loved to rev, it got discs all round which at the time (it was a 1988/E-reg) for a car in that class was excellent. I don't know how well it was looked after before i got it though as the big end bearings went. £2000 from Diahatsu to fix so imported a 2nd hand engine form Japan and the big-ends went again! Not good! Just beware of sourcing parts as only 600-odd were sold in the UK. That was a long time ago thouh, before people started getting all sorts of cars and parts from Japan so may easier now.

Big ends going is usually a result of low oil, they are very sensitive to low oil pressure/level.

Parts are becoming rarer as Dai have ceased production of spares, i.e. they have no cranks left. They do still have full engines available at £2500 a pop. Camskill can get hold of them.

Seven hundred and something were sold originally into the UK, and at last check with the DVLA only 120 or so are left on the roads.

hi guys thanks for posting your comments ive got a charade 1.3/16 vavle which is abit of an old hack but i love it to bits as soon as i found out about the 1.0 turbo that is my life time goal lol

so im saving for one right now but so many of my mates think there ste but i no for a fact there not

so the idea to keeping these little cars in good nick and running is to keep oil levels up and change it completly recently ect. ??

If you re-read the above you'll see it says to do regular oil cchanges with good quality oil AND keep the tin worm at bay.

It's hassle importing yourself. Better of getting one from a company that did it for you and paying that bit extra. Also, Japanese cars are right hand drive...

Awesome cars, ive had many since i passed my test back in 1993.

I've also had a Sapphire cosworth and a Maestro turbo, both quick cars but im still back on the GTti's as they are so much fun...and just as fast due to power weight ratio.

My black GTti is off the road now due to rust...its being scrapped. But it kicked out 182bhp at last years rolling road shoot-out.

The good parts are being transfered onto a solid white shell, and with a few more mods planned it should be close to or just over 200bhp.

My website is in need of a good update, but anyway...

By the way..

If you are looking to buy one by far the most important aspect is rust...check underneath!

Engines and other parts are fairly easy to source now the club is active, and we will continue to sort out parts that Daihatsu have stopped making..for example...oversize big end bearings from another car that we haev found fit the GTti, so old cranks that were prevously worn and scrap can now have a regrind.

Basically, I would much rather buy a car with a good and solid shell than one which has a good engine but is rotten!

Luke you sound young, listening to your mates rather than mature owners of the model

With respect, you may think that you can sort the bodywork out BUT EVERYONE ELSE is suggesting you don't - perhaps they're wrong or maybe they've learnt by the mistakes you want to make

Belive me from someone who's made made many mistakes with cars listen to those who have suffered before you

BUT THEN AGAIN you can't buy experience you can only suffer or benefit from it - good luck
