I was given one of these filters. Question is how do you use it and what does it exactly do? The filter can be rotated..how do I use this feature? Secondly, can I combine this with the hoya uv filter?...

thanks for any advice

I wouldnt combine with the UV filter because you increase the chances of vignetting etc.

Polariser basicaly cuts out a certain amount (from non to all) of polarised light, i.e. light that has been reflected.

Works bext when the sun is at one of your shoulders, rotate the polariser to get effect you like best. Cuts down light by 1 too 2 stops.

Also very handy when theres reflections in anything (water, glass, cars etc) and can cut down flare from dust/atmosphere. Not something you want on all the time.

And emphasises skies, especially blue ones with fluffy clouds smile

Go outside when the blue sky dares show its face. Look through the camera (Polariser attached) and twisle it. It'll make it go from light to dark. Lighter blue to a deeper blue.

Also, as said, if at an angle to water/ glass it'll help minimise the reflections from the surface.

thanks for the advice..will try it next time we have blue skies..so am I right in thinking a polariser would be helpful when shooting through a window out on to landscape?

if you cant get the lens right up against the window then probably. Always worth a try.
