Hi guys been searching for an e46 M3 convertible and will be viewing yet another one this week..Its a very low mileage example for its age about full main dealer history apart from last service..i hear 'clocking back' is a lucrative industry to say the least! your suggestions on any thorough ways i can make sure the mileage is genuine please?

Just the usual stuff really.

Check the service and maintenance history with BMW customer services to make sure it's genuine.

Make sure the mileages in the service book, and the time between services, go up in regular intervals, ie it doesn't go from doing 12-15,000 miles between services, which is normal, to doing say 5,000 miles but over the same time frame.

Check what other repairs it's had. If it's had a clutch, suspension bushes or more than one set of discs and pads, then that would suggest a higher mileage, or hard driven car.

Other than that it's just a case of making sure that wear and tear on the paintwork, drivers seat, steering wheel etc is consistant with the mileage.

Use a fault code reader, the ecu stores actual mileage and is much harder to alter. i also read a while ago on a similar thread that some sort of dot appears in the milometer when its been tampered with, but im not sure on that point.
