Hi guys / gals, am getting near to the point where endless dreaming turns to serious planning, in other words the credit cards are nearly paid off and a summer purchase might actually happen. My previous lotus days were elan s4 dhc, +2s and big valve europa flavoured so you can see that the kids have come and gone; soo, which one should I buy?

All your thoughts and opinions would be appreciated, ta.

^^^ Wot he said. Nice position to be in - get them all. biggrin

If I had the space I'd have a 111R/Exige as a fast road car, and a S1/Caterham as a track sg.

It's gonna have to be my only and everyday use car. In a perverse way that's how it should be just to show all the "executive car" drivers how much on a car is nowt to do with how a proper driver's car should go, corner and stop. Definitely 2nd hand 10-12k I would think - in a falsetto "I'm just a poor boy"

I'd get a very nice condition S1 111S in this budget range smile

S1 111S or Sport 135 then. The perfect allrounders.

I would say in your budget to go for the S1 111s. I looked a lot of them but decided on the Sport 160. The reason........ it is a weekend toy. If i was looking for everyday i probably would have bought the Sport 160 too, however if you are choosing with you head then the 111s would be the weapon of choice.

I bought a series 1 111s last summer with 17K on the clock.
It's my daily driver and is a joy to live with. Get a Larini fitted with a Hurricane and the smile will never ware off.

On a day to day basis aren't s2's supposed to be easier to live with - less hood leaks and easier to get the hood (off as it should be driven)?

That's true. But to be honest the s1 111s would get my vote as well.

Yes they are but on your budget, a really good S1 111s would be better than a not so good S2.

Just to be contrary, for circa £12k as a daily driver I'd get a standard S2.

Having had both an S1 Sport 160 and an S2 111S the S2 is so much better screwed together and much easier to live with. And frankly the differance on the road between a standard car and a VVC car isn't that great.

If you can stretch an S2 111S is even better but probably in your price range better to go for a really good standard S2.

yes Dead right, but I'd always rather have a better condition early car than a ropey later car. Bear in mind that early S2s didn't have short hoods.

I was in your position a while ago and decided to save more money and buy an S2 111S. I've driven loads of Elises now, and for my use (95% road) it remains my favourite Elise.

Is the early S2 hood the same as the S1 hood? I'm not sure if I've ever seen one.

Awkward budget this because its very much at the cross over point between really good S1's and early decent S2's. Everyday use, an S2 will undoubtedly be little more friendly but personally I'd agree with the others and plump for an S1 111s.

Even the early S2 long tail roof is a vast improvement over the chronic velcro and get your allen keys out S1 joke.

I've got a 2005 S2 111S with short tail roof and my mate has a 2002 standard car with long tail roof, we go out regularly together and frankly there is nothing wrong with either set up. Both come off in one go without any tools!

Personaly, the S1 was so crude there is no way I could reccomend one as a daily driver.

IMHO.

I think many on here have had both like me, but I would strongly recommend saving a little bit more and getting a looked after S2, preferably a 111S.

As a daily driver the S2 leagues ahead.
