After having done some work on a mates mk2 Driver 1.8, I put a weber carb on, wow what a difference to the nasty useless pierberg. I wonder if it would be quicker than a GTI, when it has a proper GTI exhaust setup on it? I would like to find out? Does anyone know? Did vw down tune the Driver as not to affect the sales of the GTI and then give the car some fun years later with the Weber?

I think the Driver is 90bhp, adding the carbs may make 10% increase which will be approx 100bhp,full GTI system is worth probably 5-7bhp so you are getting pretty close to the 8v 112bhp. The Driver is probably a little lighter as well.

This is on the assumption that the driver still makes all 90 BHP in the first place wink

Someone on Ed38 had a 1.8 Driver with a Webber Carb, Gti cam and exhaust and it made 103bhp on the rollers iirc, def had less than the 8v Gti anyway.

Prob just cheaper and easier to put the Gti engine in imo.

Sorry OP and greengranny a driver will be slower and by quite a fair bit!

a mate of mine had a 1.8 driver with a webber 32/36 carb, 8v GTI cam, manifold and exhaust system, a K&N pancake filter and few other bits and he used to kid himself into thinking it would be as fast as a real gti. Fair enough it may have been 100 odd horse power but the old carb set up is still no match for the Digi ignition set up on a gti.

The only way to extract more power and make a single carb engine close to GTI power is serious amounts of head work and a 2.0L "2E" bottom end but by the time you have done all that you could have bought a gti.

Enjoy the driver for what it is dont kid yourself and think it will be as fast as a 8v gti becuase it wont, i used to destroy my mates driver with my 8v gti, in fact my lil bros 1.3 polo GT was faster off the mark than my mates 1.8 driver.

Stick with the mods you have done and then when you can afford the insurance go and buy a gti 16V and go proper fast!

I used to own a sprint/hillclimb Scirocco GT-S with a fairly heavily modded version of the same 90bhp 1800cc carb engine in the Driver. It had a Weber 32/36 carb, ported and polished head, 280 degree cam, 4-2-1 branch manifold, straight-through Jetex exhaust and a Facet competition fuel pump. Made 124 bhp on the dyno. I was quite impressed that it was 34 bhp up on standard, but was lumpy as hell with that cam and the car was loud enough to wake the dead. The car was slightly faster than an 8v GTI (I've had a couple); any weight that had been stripped out of the car went straight back in with a full steel rollcage.

You're talking about a fairly large amount of money to make a relatively small performance hike on the car.
