I recently purchased a 1998 Esprit. My 1 year old has decided to play a bad joke on Dad an has hidden my keys. I have ordered new keys through the local Lotus dealer but they are telling me I need to replace the entire alarm system at a cost of about $1,500.00. Does anyone have any info on this subject or info on how to bypass the alarm???

On some cars there is a master key which the dealer can use to reset the system.

Do you have a master key? if so you can get the system reprogrammed for the new keys at the dealer.

There is a transponder in the key fob which works with the immobiliser / alarm system.

Did you get a full set of keys from PO / Dealer?

I may be wrong but but unless you have such a system as above you may need to pay. It may be covered by your insurance?

You need the "wand" that comes with the keys. Without the "magic wand" you are stuck.

Having youngsters myself I would say:

1. Toy Bin
2. Garbage Pail
3. Toilet
4. Wherever they normally "play"

Commiserations, etc etc

I think a little caution is required on this thread. i.e. lets not be TOO specific on how to bypass the key code, get spare keys cut, re-code keys etc etc! I would hate to see the insurance premiums suddenly rise.
