Got this emailed to me this morning:

http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/product_info.php/product...

Seems like a great deal, but are the EBC Kevlar pads any good? I wanted to get Axxis, but they are £50 a pair from P5 - this deal seems a no-brainer in comparison.

Highly likely! I drive like a granny anyway so don't need race-track stopping power. I am sure they will be adequate.

Nice use of the word 'gash' there by the way. Not heard that one for a while.

The EBCs are gash tongue out

No, really they are - but that's enough about GreenStuff.
I haven't heard anything bad about the Kevlar or YellowStuff pads. They won't be as good as the Axxis but for road use that doesn't really matter.

As long as the 'Kevlar' name isn't the new name for the 'BlackStuff' range then you'll be fine. EBC BlackStuff are/were the gashest gash that ever gashed.

think blackstuffs are kevlars. they are gash frown sorry mate

very grabby / inconsistent and difficult to modulate on teh road, and melt under hard driving on track.

Well there you go. Now I HAVE heard something bad about EBC Kevlars - and from a source I trust!

christ - even if they only last me a year @ 7000 miles its still a good buy for MOT time if your pads are borderline...

What the craic with changing the disks on the '5? From my service history the pads have been changed every 2 yrs or so, but I cant see sign of the disks being changed..

How long do the disks last under normal road driving?

I used BlackStuff pads on my first mini, when it still had the 998cc engine in it. They faded stupidly quickly under enthusiastic driving. The same braking system with M1144 pads hardly ever faded, even when the engine was swapped for one with twice the power.

As far as longevity for Mazda disks goes, my Roadster's been on the same disks for the last 60k miles, and they were the ones that were on the car when it was imported at 40k miles old, so there's half a chance it's still on the original disks at 100k miles old..

DOH!

Can't really confirm what they are - the box is labelled 'EBC Ultimax'....

To be honest, I am really not a racing driver so probably won't notice the difference that much.

Does anyone know if there is a guide to replacing brake discs on the net? There is the brake pad guide on Miata.net but nothing about discs.

There is probably a guide somewhere but as long as you know how to change brake pads then you are 90% of the way there already.
At the front, once you have the calliper off you just remove the 2 bolts holding the calliper brackets and remove it and the disc should fall off. If it's stubborn and won't budge you can screw a bolt (M6x1 thread - a 10mm head bold is usually right) into the threaded hole in the disc to help it off (don't hit it with a mallet like many people do - this is bad for your wheel bearings & bushes).
I can't quite remember but I think the rears are pretty much the same.

Will the discs come of without removing the calliper mounting bracket? They won't on the 1.8...

In all seriousness how bad are the pads?

The MX5 is my Fiancee's car so it doesn't really get abused (apart from when I give it a run) and won't ever see a track so will these pads be ok for us?

I need to change the front discs/pads and at that price (£60 for the 1.6) it makes sense to do all round.

Cheers,
Phill

Well they aren't going to be bad, they just won't be great. All brake pads have to meet a certain standard these days.
If your gf just drives it around like a fiesta then she won't have a problem.
