Hi There!

Can anyone recommend a decent induction system for an Elise S2 111S?

I've owned my 2005 model for a few weeks now and feel it may benefit (probably only sound wise!) from a decent induction kit.

I remember fitting a K&N unit to an old (well, new at the time) Honda Integra type R and it really suited the engine.... emphasising the change in cam profile when it came on song.

So.... is this worth doing and does anyone know where I should put my money? coffee

Cheers,

Craig

Isn't the whole point of the 111S that it's got a specially quietened induction system? wink

Only teasing smile I wouldn't mind a rortier induction sound from mine actually, I'll be watching the thread smile

You wont get any noticable performance increase but it wil sound much better.

I had a Hurricane which sounded excellent and was a fairly easy DIY fit. Available thru eliseparts I would expect.

Have a look at the Hurricane system from Elise-Shop or Eliseparts - K&Ns make a lovely sound but are exposed to the temps in the engine bay so you'll be chucking hot air in. There's even a Carbon Fibre bling version with as silicone pipe.

If you want to spend more, the ITG also gets good feedback but is around £300 compared to £180. Also bear in mind the Hurricane uses a cotton filter, the ITG a foam unit. Either way if you don't clean them (and the guy who services your car will more than likely leave this responsibility to you), they will clog up - bear in mind foam filters can fall apart if neglected. Cotton ones last a bit longer but the mesh that supports it will eventually corrode if left alone.

So, the K&N's a definite no-go then? Will the hot air actually reduce power, mess us the engine in some way or what???

I'm no technical expert, so leave that to the experience of others.... I've used K&N a lot in the past and always found their products to be well made, well tested before launch and sound excellant.... and I can get one fitted locally.

But if its a no-go i would consider alternatives as suggested. driving

Any comments welcome....

Hot air's just less dense so the engine gets less oxygen to burn. In theory it'd certainly produce a little less power, yes. I'm not sure how much less though.

I have the Hurricane fitted in mine and is easy to fit and is a great mod, and sounds like chewbacca at 3-4K revs. rage

I have done some tests logging engine bay and intake plenum temps on an S2. At 15C Ambient the engine bay gets to 40C after 3 mins stationary and drops to 20C when moving.

With an enclosed filter (hurricane) and cold air pipe stationary will keep intake plenum at ambient for a couple of minues until the intake & plenum heatsoaks and temps start to rise but doesnt get above 25C. When moving plenum is around ambient.

With an open filter (cold air pipe and filter enclosure removed) when stationary the plenum temp will start to rise immediatley and will equal 40C engine bay temps around 5 mins. When moving plenum is around ambient plus 5C

What difference does temp make to power ? Hub dyno testing same car on different days at 5C and 15C ambient shows an absolute difference of 5bhp (uncorrected) at 170bhp. I dont know if its a linear relationsip of 6bhp per 10C, if your interested read up on power correction formulae such as DIN70020.

Yes,I'd agree with what's been said above,I originally had a good old K&N fitted to my S2 as I have never had any problems in the past with other cars but boy oh boy with it stuck in the S2 the power definatley dropped off.To be honest I did'nt really notice any real difference until I fitted an ITG Maxogen kit in the car, then I noticed!!!I realised as soon as I took the car out the first time I had it fitted that there was a difference, the engine suddenly came alive and the throttle pick up was certainly more perky.See my kit fitted in my profile pic.Yes ok it did cost a packet but it was worth it,no regrets.

My 111S came with a carbon Huricane fitted, first thing I did was remove it and put the standard airbox back on.

I know it's personal but I couldn't stand the booming and can't see the point of making more noise just for the sake of it if it has no performance benefit.

If you want to make noise, buy a Saxo with a waste paper bin poking out the back.

OK daft question I know but what did you use to remove the gunk / oil etc in the bay - or was that what you used the WD40 for?

Thanks

Yeah it was just WD40,mind you the engine was pretty clean to start off with, the previous owner had it garaged and only took it out when it was dry so lucky for me when I came along to buy it.
