quick glovebox catch question
Discussion
I have the required part from B&Q; all looks fairly straight forward but there is an additional small metal curved shaped part that I can't seem to figure how that works with the catch....and no it's not the bottom latch! I presume it's not required for the glovebox and maybe needed if it were used for a loft but just wanted to see if anyone else could shed some light on it?

Hi Lawrence,
The catch, as far as the glovebox is concerned, doesn't require the metal plate. I imagine the metal plate is for the loft hatch as you say. It's probably some kind of face plate finish for the catch, or maybe you are meant to screw it / stick it to the outside of the loft hatch so that you know where to push the loft hatch to open it !?!?
Either way I'm pretty sure it's not used in the car, though when you fit it make sure it's lined up properly so that there is no un-due stress on the catch when closed. In addition make sure the glove box iasn't slammed shut as the plastic the catches are made from is very brittle..

Cheers. The catch and latch I have is metal though...direct replacement for previous one. Bugger to fit and line up! Still not great as when it catches i need to give the bottom part of the lid a good whack to get it to open.

I got it from B&Q- part no N227 I think called auto latch for loft zinc plated
Hmmm i think you'll find thats this B&QNot this RS Components

Do a search and you will find pictures, part number ect.
The loft catch develops a habit of jamming if a tall passenger has pushed the glovebox up with their knees.
Once this happens you have to give the catch a jolt. Slap it or let the glovebox lid drop. This makes the plunger in the catch spring back into position.
I got fed up with fitting a new catch after every tall passenger.
Now what we need is a way of stopping that jamming...

You can get a central door lock solenoid in the corner of the glovebox, behind the carpet. The shortened rod exits the lid rim and goes into the dash. So no power and its safe to leave the roof down. The posh way is to have a switch replacing the original catch, using a central locking module, so press up as normal and the solenoid pulls in, to close the same, press up and the solenoid pops out. Or for cheapness, a seperate switch which needs two hands, one to hold the lid up while locking, same to release. I can email pics, nothing to see and the feel is right luxury !
