I've just booked my theory and I'll follow that up with the CBT and DAS shortly after. My brother was given a Kawasaki ZX9-R by his partner and was put off going through the DAS with the reality of a huge bike in the garage. He's offered it to me, and I certainly won't be riding it but I am considering a ZX4R as a first bike. He's happy for me to sell or trade the bike for a 400 but I'm wondering what it's worth, I have no experience selling bikes!

Its a Kawasaki ZX9-R on an L plate, just over 16,000 miles. It was a good runner but has been standing for a few months and probably needs a little work, which I'll happily have done. Apart from looking a little sorry and unused at the moment I'm told that it was a very good bike. Any help and advice is much appreciated!

Couldn't be happier with the free bike and it is a good one!
It's a very scary thing to a new biker though and that aside I can't get a sensible insurance quote where as the 400 is the cheap and sensible option.

So most of you guys are not concerned that someone with limited experience has been handed a 900! laugh

Either way I'm looking forward to passing and getting out on something this summer. smile

Well, I bought a 500, passed my test thinking that'd be enough. Within 2 months I'd p/x'd it for a 1000. Horses for courses. Good to hear you're thinking about a 400 though, that is more sensible (wish I could do sensible sometimes smile)

i had a 600 right after my DAS with only 13days experience on a 125 besides that. in 8 months i part-ex'd it for a 1400.
bigger engines are often easier as you dont need to be in the right gear, but of course that means its easier to be quicker than you expect until your used to it.

I'll give you 50 quid for it.....will even pick it up smile

I know it's no sensible as such but couldn't you just ride the zx9 and be very, very careful on it? They only go as fast as you make em you know?

Although the insurance might be high you haven't had to buy a bike, so it's not so much of an issue.

For what it's worth my first bike was a cd400 superdream, got bored $hitless after a few months and went to a GSXR 750. The initial ride away from the garage was a bit buttock clenching but you soon get used to the size/power.

My first bike is a M reg ZXR750 and all that low down torque (Relatively speaking) has made it a great learner bike, really enjoying it.

Use it and enjoy it!

The ZX9R has considerably more low-down grunt than the 750, if the OP is confident & sensible enough to start with it then fair enough but it is oh sooooo tempting to open the throttle for that banshee intake howl - got me into trouble (with the law) more than a couple of times. rolleyes

If I'd had the ZX9R as my first bike it would definitely not have been a 'good thing' (although I'd have loved it).

Oh and I'll double the £50 offer.....
