can't lock / unlock with the keyfob

I've got a meta alarm / keyfob set up, but cannot lock / unlock the car or disarm with the meta keyfob. Checked the batteries and tried the spare keyfob with no joy. Only way to start it is by leaving it unlocked in the garage and using the plastic key "thing" to insert in the steering column where the flashing led is. It worked a few days ago, but the battery was low and only just started even though I have an accumate plugged in all the time. Any ideas please? I wondered if I unpliug the live terminal off the battery and leave for a minute and then plug it back in if it would "reset" things??
