Removing Mirrors

I have the horrible bug mirrors and am trying to get them off. There were two screws on the outside which have been removed and on the inside there is a plate attached to the socket which was just held in place with some kind of glue. The plate is loose now but I can't for the life of me see how to detach the plate from the socket or remove the ball from the socket without reverting to hacksaw.. which I didn't want to do in case anyone else could make use of them. Anyone who has removed these know how to proceed ?

The mirrors are just a ball and socket joint, spray a bit of WD40 into the joint to free it up a bit then pull apart. The ball will pop out of the joint and the mirror can be removed without any damage. As they say in all the books refitting is the reverse of removal.

Ah cheers Tony... that's done it... although was a bit worried about brute force breaking the door... now then.. I need two new mounting holes in the door... this may be a stupid question... but I'm not a fibreglass worker... can I just use a normal wood drill bit or do I need something special ?

By the way.. I shall soon have 4 mirrors free that I don't need/want... two horrible bug ones.. and two of the later CX25 ? ones... although the glass is broken in one... anyone interested PM me.

Any HSS drills will do. What type of mirrors are you fitting?

MX-5... I'm hoping I can get away without fibreglassing... but I need a file... and B&Q is closed damnit. Also.. does anyone know what the stuff is that was used to bind in the old mirrors.. it's like a black silicon sealant.. but is really solid.
