Dammit,

I've avaoided this since launch after having a few issues with playing FAR too much on Diablo, Galaxies and Everquest but my housemate now has 2 free trial discs....

Apparently we will be stating playing this evening on Silverymoon (Due to him knowing someone on there) anyone out there on that server I can say hi to when I arrive? smile

PS whats with the ultra slow patch download? I've got a 20meg line and it's showing me a 5 hour ETA on an 800odd meg patch?

You can try downloading the patches from elsewhere, then applying them, used to work for me and was a hell of a lot faster.

Its probably because you have more than 1 pc on the same connection, the appropriate ports are being forwarded to the wrong machine.

Always seems slow when I download patches too, it flies up the first bit then slows down. Looking at the details it seems I download at about 20kB/s from the main server, but the p2p just starts and stops without getting up to much speed.
I play on the US servers Blackwing Lair and Gul'dan.

Thanks guys,

It turns out that the router wont forward ports correctly for the blizzard downloader but is otherwise fine.

There are two of us on the same connection but it is a 20meg line which flies under other circumstances.

This thing is SERIOUSLY addictive, upgraded to full about 24 hours after getting the game (and playing for 16 of them).

Currently waiting for patch 2.4 to finish its endless download so we can keep playing!

Some of the newer routers have clever auto port-forwarding protocols that work nicely with Vista - means me and the other half have no problems simmultaneously downloading patches.

How're you getting on with WoW? I've been an addict for the last 2 1/2 years and it's not getting boring yet...

I'm on Nordrassil, help run a [small] guild on there that's getting it's act together raiding Karazhan which is great fun.

Game definately takes off after 70 for sure.

What sort of spec PC do you need?

Nothing stellar really but a decent amount of memory really helps - 2GB should be fine even on Vista.

If you get slow performance you can turn off a lot of the fancy graphics - not a critical loss as the gameplay is great.

I've got a Code 2 Duo, 2.4GHZ, 4GB ram and a pretty high-end NVidia card (£250 worth last year) and I get ~50 fps on 1900x1200 screen resolution.

Might have to go SLI to get back to 70fps since upgrading to a 24" monitor smile

I know a few who play on medium spec laptops without a problem.

Performance can take a hit from having a lot of addons (customisations to the standard UI to provide more info to you), these can really hurt things if you have too many.

I'm co-running a 30-40 member guild, only recently got a few of us to 70 (including myself). Looking forward to karazhan (im still doing the attunement, none of us have the key). I'm on alonsus (horde side) were we appear to be outnumbered 3:1 by the ally-scum frown

Tried a few "heroic" instances the other day and got smashed into next week.

Not without the other side enabling "pvp" (unless your on a pure-pvp realm). The system is very well thought out, for example: if say a healer heals a player who has pvp enabled, he will himself become pvp enabled. To turn off pvp requires you not fight any pvp enabled player for 5 minutes (this stops you from cheesily turning off pvp to get out of the trouble you've just caused)

There are specific areas designed for PVP (battlegrounds, arenas and some world-pvp events like capturing towers). The PVP side is a whole game by itself (one that i enjoy a lot myself)

Interesting. I always loved the PVP aspect of UO & did on occasion dabble in the dark art of PKing.

You earn "honor points" for pk's which can be exchanged for some rather nice stuff (you will need several thousand points/kills however, but easily done in a 40v40 battleground).

It runs on most pc's even ones that are several years old (you just turn down the bells and whistles). Don't let the simplistic graphics and interface lead you to think the game is basic, far from it.

To be honest, i'm not overly fussed about the graphics. It's more the game play aspect of MMORPGs that do it for me. My only concern is devoting enough time to it that A) makes the monthly cost worthwhile & B) allows me to progress enough to get the enjoyment from it.

Does it work similar to UO where you need to train up your skills? On UO (the non-official shards), you could employ macros to do the job, I take it that probably isn't allowed in WoW?

Yeah, you have loads of "professions" like leatherworking and blacksmithing, these take months to skill up (not because they are slow, but because there are many recipes to track down, some in non-obvious places, aswell as gathering materials for some of the more advanced ones).

You can use macros and all manor of interface "add-ons" which Blizzard openly encourage.

Awesome, so you could technically just leave the macro on 24/7 to rank up your swordfighting skill for example?

Are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure if you get found out your account will be banned.
