Why are new shape XK prices so low?

Maybe we should be asking why are UK list prices so high.USA customers seem to enjoy far more realistic list pprices.
All cars in the US are incredibly cheap. All cars in the UK are ridiculously expensive.
I remember have a conversation with a German friend nearly 20 years ago. He live near the Porsche factory but was saying that if he wanted to buy one it was much cheap to fly to the US, buy one there, air freight it home and then pay import duty.
Almost everything is cheaper in the US, even when the dollar is strong. At the moment when the dollar is so weak the differences are even bigger than normal.
My query didn't really pertain to geographical differances.
Just my brother has just traded his 2006 / 06 car against a new car and got a right royal spanking on it.
Best, and indeed only offer was £36k
For a 22 month old £65k car I'd call that a bit of a shocker.
Only one dealer would actualy make an offer, all the others just declined.

Sorry if I wandered off target Bertie.I suppose a serious answer would entail highlighting a number of factors which combine to cause the horrific depreciation your brother encountered.Initial ad campaign positioned the XK as a status prop for women. The engineering and performance were hardly mentioned. The car was not cool unlike the AstonV8,and its buyers were regarded as poor relations by the media.Jaguar should have fitted a folding hardtop as standard using the space taken up by the useless rear seats. Other issues include stability of the company,Tata image, age profile of typical Jag owners, retro designs etc.Despite all of this there are some signs that new products like the XF and forthcoming XJ will make Jaguar cool again provided they are keenly priced. This will be of no help to your brother and must worry other owners.
Bertie,
36K seems low compared with guide prices of about 44.5 for an early XK convertible or 41 for a fixed head. (What Car, trade price).
Most 60K cars loose best part of 1/2 their value over 2 years, a 6series BMW would be similar (again based on a quick look at What Cars website), an SL is not far off this.
I wonder whether the present credit uncertainty is making things more difficult. If trading in I'd have thought they would have been keen as that was obviously the only way to make the new sale. A quick look at Jaguar.co.uk under used cars shows that the dealers are asking at least £47 K for a convertible, but that everything is pretty low mileage. Perhaps people are getting scared about what the likes of Red Ken and the government are up to, or fuel prices. On the saloon side everyone seems to be looking at buying diesels and the 2nd hand market has always been more concerned with running costs that the new car buyer.

New shape XK's are two a penny. Most Jag drivers bought the new XK and subsequently chopped it in for the new XKR when that arrives just under a year later and for £5k more. No one will touch an XK unless it has the 20inch Senta Alloys. Plus it would also have to be fully loaded.
But TBH, they do lose a shed load, always have. I do hope the Jaguar brand will become 'cool' again.
Incidently why did you bro chop it in and what did he then go buy?

Are the residuals for the XKR better? I need to change my xj8 Soverign in September\October. I had thougth that an XK would be too expensive for an every day driver (18,000 miles a year), but hey . . . . .
Nope!
The XK will be the best car you can sit in for 18k, believe you me! Drove for 7 hours from UK to Verdun, France on Friday. Arrived feeling totally refreshed!

Just 2 years on and time for a change.G
It's a realy nicely specced thing too, book is £42k, retain £47k so someone is in for a bargain or more likely the dealer in for a fat £10k margin, but what else can you do?
He's getting a Maserati Gran Tourismo, being delivered on friday.
His Jag has certainly done worse thean his 6 series he had before.

My XKR is an every day driver, it's 3 days till it's first birthday and I've done just over 16k, and it's been awesome

Very nice. Did he chop it in to Maser dealer?
If you think the Jag took a hit, that Maser is going to take a huge one too!
G
He's had a Maserati Coupe before the BMW, took less of a hit than the Jag!If you think the Jag took a hit, that Maser is going to take a huge one too!
G
In 2 years I took less of a hit on my last Lambo and that cost twice as much!
Well perhaps everyones residuals are getting worse.
Looking at the figures on Parker's coz What car don't want to show values on Masseratis
And I'm only doing this coz I'm bored waiting on a teleconference
Based on a 2006 car on an 06 plate
Jag XK conv new 65, part ex 44 you loose 32%
BMW 650 conv. new 58, part ex 22, you loose 43%
Masser new 56627, part ex 31.6, you loose 44%
Lambo Gallardo, new 134, part ex 92, you loose 31%
Can't explain why the Masser sales droid only wanted to give you 10K under book other than because he thought he could.
Spoke to an Audi salesman yesterday socially, he was saying everyones got too much stock at the moment.

It seems your Brother could afford to lose that extra £10k or he would have walked away. His desire for a new car to replace his 2 year old clapped out shed exceeded common sense in many people's minds, but each to their own.
If there are people like your Brother around then dealers will continue doing this.
Why DOES a car, like the XKR, become almost worthless overnight?
Both the new model and the one i have just sold, (2003 XKR 4.2), are rated, quite rightly, amongst the very best GT cars in the world.
You get everything, image, looks, engine, kit, style, heritage, sound, the lot.
So WTF, exactly, are they worth so little after 5 minutes?

I just sold mine for £21K, a car loaded with kit, with tiny mileage and all options.
That was £25/30K-worth of anyones' money.
