Some time ago - Spetember '04 a thread was written by someone called steveiy, detailling the gearbox removal procedure of a Chim.

I am thinking of refurbing mine as it has not sold yet, and fancy a bit of a challenge, as I have never rebuilt one before.

Anyway, after Googleing, I cane across the second page of this thread, which seems brilliant, but as it was a while ago, page one is lost :-(

If anyone has any idea how to find it, or has it saved anywhere or has had any experience rebuilding one, please drop me a line - it would be much appreciated!

Here is page 2 of the thread

Thanks Chaps

Maybe not Spend, but if you look at the Ebayers items you will see that even if the OP as the SD1 box then this company may still be able to helpscratchchininstead of taking the p*ss try helping the guy outbiggrin

Cheers That Daddy, Was actually looking at that kit on Ebay - will certainly come in handy should I decide to remove the Box.
I do have a T5, and Steve Heaths' bible, but it just brushes over the details...would like to know if someone has done it, and how much grief it has given them?

Thanks again

Tom

It not too hard to remove the gearbox. I've done it this weekend by myself. You'll need some very long extending bars and joints (1/2&quotwink to reach the top top bell housing bolts.

Remove gear knob
Loosen the connecting nuts onto the rear anti roll bar (the ones in the bar)
Remove the anti roll bar mounts.
Loosen the U clamp on the front exhaust section.
Remove passenger front wheel to access fron exhaust mounting bolt onto engine
Remove the bolts into the chassis from the rear box protection plate. No need to loosen the bolts from the plate to the exhaust box.
Remove the Gearbox Unversal Joint bolts and mark position
Loosen grip ring on diff drive shaft and pull out gearbox Universal Joint section
Disconnect all wires to gearbox
Remove the Clutch slave cylinder
Remove the two top bolts. You'll need to use very long extending bars so your racket is near the back of the gearbox.
Fasten racket tie straps around the box and loop through the chassis tunnel tubing above gearbox. You'll need to secure the racket end to a solid securing point.
Remove the rear gearbox mounting bracket.
Remove the remaing bolts on the bell housing.
Remove the 10mm bolts on the bell housing cover plate.
Your ready to break the bell housing from the engine. It's best to get some help now! I did it myself but I do have a 2 post lift.
Place jack under engine to take weight or clamp strong timber below engine.
Glently move the gearbox apart and lower using straps.
This is the really hard part as the gearbox does not lower easily. It needs to be twisted to get pasted the chassis.

Best of luck.
