Hi guys,
CO2 has probably been discussed to death. However, I am under the impression that CO2 makes forests grow. Plants thrive off Co2 and in return for this they produce oxygen. Am I being a space cadet or am I right? Why are we being charged for creating oxygen?

Plants turn CO2 into O2, animal life (and combustion of hydrocarbons) turns O2 into CO2. Thus producing lots of extra CO2 and cutting down all the trees was probably a bad idea.

The O2 in your CO2 has to come from somewhere wink

Yes so we are outputting good and bad stuff, except the bad stuff gets turned into even more good? wink

Erm, we're converting "good stuff" into "bad stuff" and the trees are converting it back. Your car (and your body) take in O2 and spit out CO2. Trees do the opposite.

We're only outputting good stuff if you're a tree.

Take octane for instance which is C8H18, when you burn a molecule of octane you need 17 molecules of oxygen (O2) to do so and get 8 molecules of CO2 and 9 molecules of H2O in return (if I have done my arithmetic correctly). This means your engine is taking free oxygen out of the atmosphere (which is what your induction/carburetor is for) and turning it into CO2 and H2O, both of which are good if you are a plant.

Now plants do indeed turn CO2 and H20 into sugars and release O2 again, but not fast enough to take up all of the CO2 that is being released from fossil fuels (otherwise CO2 levels in the atmosphere would not be rising). However fortunately there is more than enough O2 in the atmosphere for fossil fuel combustion not to have a significant effect on O2 levels.

However, please if we are heading towards a discussion of global warming, can it be taken to the Pie and Piston, I for one would rather the Elise forum remain a refuge of relative sanity (with the exception of Village Idiot of course)? wink

Well my Elise is 0-60 in less than 6 seconds with Co2 levels similar to a ford focus. Happy days (If it made any difference in the first place) so... Normal (more expensive) days! wink

Is the price of pre-2001 Elises/Exiges about to go up?

Yes, in Ireland. The VRT here is going from 25% to 28%

Plants also turn O2 into CO2 at night when there is no light - I'm surprised we don't get taxed 'night tax' for plants we keep in the dark....rolleyes

They turn O2 into CO2 during the day as well (it is just that they turn even more CO2 into O2 through photosynthesis than O2 to CO2 via respiration)

nah, chemistry and physics were far more fun, explosives, radioactive sources and electricity, how can biology (well plant respiration at least wink ) compete with that?

My school reports would suggest otherwise!

However, I am a professional nerd these days, but it does pay for my Elise drivingcloud9

Except that the oxygen from photosynthesis comes from the photolysis of water not CO2 you're right.....
