Can I tax my car on a temporary policy?
Discussion
Hi all, a (hopefully) quick question. The tax on my Clio is coming up for renewal, but the car is still laid up for the winter and hence not insured. I have an active policy for my other car - can I add the Clio on that for a couple of weeks and use that policy document to obtain the tax?

I'm not sure about the above, but I know you can tax a car using temporary insurance from the likes of Dayinsure/Daycover etc.
Of course, you could delare the Clio SORN if you aren't using it and it isn't stored on a public road.
are you sure about the first part? I always understood it that you can't use day cover to tax a car? Of course, you could delare the Clio SORN if you aren't using it and it isn't stored on a public road.
great if you can though

If you could, pikeys would buy a day's insurance, tax the car, and then not bother paying premiums for the rest of the year.
You can't do it.

According to that you can.
Edited to add: However, in support of Vesuvius, the answer to question 74 here suggests you can't:

I was under the impression that as long as insurance is valid on the day the tax disc comes into force, that's fine.
Also, as far as I know a certificate the customer has downloaded themselves shouldn't be acceptable (although I doubt many POs would realise). However, Daycover are able to provide a 'proper' certificate for an extra charge - maybe that could explain the FAQ discrepancy above.

I got 7 days free insurance when i bought the rangie, it had no tax on it, took it post office the day after and got a 12month ticket with the temp insurance cover. If you could, pikeys would buy a day's insurance, tax the car, and then not bother paying premiums for the rest of the year.

Yep, same here, it was a free 7 day policy from Norwich Union. ive only been in this area for 3 months prior too so its not like im seen as a local.
You can. i've done it for my last car. i was selling it but in my haste i cancelled the policy on it and took another one out on my new car.
The tax was about to run out on the car that i was selling so i got 3 days temporary cover (about £20) and taxed it online.
You only need insurance for the day the tax comes into force. make sure that the temporary insurance cover you get updates the insurance database so you are covered.
