TAMORA TO A CHIMAERA
Discussion
hi, just wanted to know if anyone has had a tamora or 350 and gone back to a chimaera !
i've had my tam now for over 6 months and love it, but everyday wonder about the speed 6 issues and rebuild costs, my car is a 2004 with 16,000 miles on the clock and running well !
how do the two cars compare ! what sort of engine costs rebuilds would you have on a v 8 engine over time ,and other cost such as clutch ,and chassis on an older tvr !
i'm just wondering that the v8 engines must be prone to some problems at certain mileage's ,camshaft etc
and i could way up cost's between the two models , i do around 4,000 to 5,000 a year
thankyou keith

Thought i read once that rover V8 cam problems were to do with poor installation in the first place when left the factory? I have been considering moving to a Tam from a Chim. But i have upped the power to be quicker than a Tam, and upgraded brakes and suspension to reduce the handling gap. And updated things i thought looked dated. I may consider going down the LS6 engine into a Tam route for a future project. Dont know if this has been done in the Tam yet? Dont want to be the first. Have heard that the steering rack may be a problem with an LS6.
Considering a Tam myself but still look at a Chimaera and think 'less worry' - supercharge one and leave behind the Tam too. The niggle for me are the looks of the Chimaera - not quite as nice as the Tam IMHO!!
Be interested to the reaction to this one - how bout pointing some Tamora owners this way so there is a fair cut?

I was hankering after a Tuscan, but instead i will be collecting my supercharged Chim on Friday Be interested to the reaction to this one - how bout pointing some Tamora owners this way so there is a fair cut?

thanks guys for your views !
its nice to see that alot of you will sooner upgrade your spec rather than buy a newer tvr
but some of you must of had repair bills on your v8s over the years ?
chimjunkie i'm sure i saw your car at the herts and beds meet last month perhaps you could show me some of the work you've had done ,when i can get to the next meet !

Yes, Went griff' [x2] T350, Chim 450. Along with me needing some money back at the time, and the constant worry of the S6 letting go at any time along with depreciation it seemed a no-brainer. No regrets. [Apart from losing £7k in 9 months] An RV8 will go for longer and if it goes wont cost as much to fix. Plus, it sounds better.
The T350 was a fabulous car to drive and I loved it, but needed revving to get anywhere and if I revved it always thought it might let go. Now, I know some on here have not had any S6 prob's but, those I know have. I wanted a car I could drive without too much concern, not one I was afraid to start up.

I had a Chimaera for 6 years before my T350. The T350 is a much easier car to live with, lighter clutch, steering, better all round. Of course the Chimaera can be uprated. If the supercharger option had existed when I had mine I'd have been tempted.
However, don't forget that there are a few supercharger options cropping up for the Speed Six now/soon
As for fragility of the two models, I was forever fiddling with the Chimaera. Not much needs tweaking on the T350. So even with an engine going pop, the time spent off the road would be less.
I still love Chimaeras, but wouldn't swap my T350 for one.

I am amazed I am reading this, considering you have possibly one of the nicest Tamoras about. We met at a meet recently, saw it there, lovely car(I was driving a silver Boxster). Is it just the "engine thing" or is there anything else about it you don't like about it?
I think it's fair to say that the V8 cars are cheaper to run overall but without wishing to start a pi55ing contest they are no match in standard form performance wise to the S6 cars.
That said if you not after ultimate performance and you fancy the V8 soundtrack, why not.
You pays your money...............

hi ribol i owe you a drink ! it was nice to meet you and nick at the meet i do remember you
"i love my car" its a great car to drive, but it is just the engine thing which is a shame waiting for it to go pop or not !
i'm just seeing what other tvr owners think to justify the costs of a v8 or s6
hope to meet up with you at another meet and i'll buy you a drink thanks keith

So you are the one that owes me the drink
Bearing in mind that my Chim is the wimp model(400/2000X) most expenses are going to be cheaper than the rest of the TVR range.
I have changed a few bits and pieces on mine to keep it in good nick but I doubt I could have run anthing else similar without spending more. I replaced all the bits that tend to go before they went and have suffered no reliability issues as a result.
I will be going to France in it yet again in a few weeks time, if I forget to check the oil or water before I go it won't worry me at all, I know it won't need any. Total piece of mind motoring.
(I will no doubt check oil/water before I go, but I am sure you get the point)
Just had £4.5K spent on my Chim engine for a Taraka rebuild. Don''t regret any of it and will be spending more on other stuff in the coming year (nitrons and brakes probably) so go into it with your eyes open. A mate bought a Tuscan just after me and has spent very little on that. If your S6 is post 54 then I understand you're in a much better space - even if it isn't then a rebuild at Power is a fixed cost and you don't have to worry as much about the other costs of owning an older car (chasis, other parts waring out, etc.).
Seems like a fairly balanced argument to me - it could go either way really.

What sort of cost is involved in this? I desperately want some more power (mines a std 400) but can't afford a newer car due to a forthcoming wedding, the SC kit looks like it may be the ideal compromise particularly as I not only love my Chim but have also spent a lot of money getting her to the condidition shes in now.
Did you test drive an SC before having the conversion done? If so how noticeable was the difference and is it just as easy to drive as a standard engined car?
Zippee, there is over 80bhp difference! This may be noticeable
Will be as quick or quicker than the average speed6 car. Being a supercharger, the power is introduced in the same manner as would a larger capacity. Smooth and from tickover upward. I would have definately done this to my 400 if it was available at the time. I went down the 500 route with mods on top. Cheaper to do the supercharger as long as you have a good base engine to start with. You will also need to budget for bigger brakes if you are running 240's on the front.

David was really helpful when I recently enquired and gave me a full breakdown of what is involved and the costing.
