Excellent news.

Incidentally, I wonder whether it will have the side effect of reducing oil prices? Surely if industries had less need for fossil fuels when cheaper electricity became more viable, the pressure would be reduced on the oil companies to deliver umpty-squillion barrels a year, meaning it could be churned out slower and less expensively for the world's motorists?

There must be a reason why France, a very nuclear state, has much cheaper petrol prices than we do.

I doubt it would make any dents in the oil market as not much oil is burnt in power stations today, so it wont save much there.

Anyway the oil market is global, our piddly little country wont make much change to it.

Petrols not really any cheaper in France than the UK these days, think the difference was more to do with the level of duty being charged.

The supply of oil is a global thing so how can localised differences in demand make a difference to the price in that locale? Genuine question; you may be correct I just need it explaining.

A pity they want to ramp up our nuclear industry now, AFTER our capability to manufacture reactors in this country has been lost

It also claims nuclear power will help the UK meet its carbon emission targets - although environmental groups say its likely impact has been overstated.

They have called for the money to be spent on renewables such as wind and wave power instead.
I'm intrigued, even if we were to spend £20bn on renewable energy, i very much doubt it could produce anywhere near the amount of power £20bn worth of nuclear power stations could, hence we would still be reliant on gas/coal/oil/nuclear to provide the remainder.
These bloody lentil eating muppets need to start looking at the bigger picture, if the UK was to produce 75% of its power needs from nuclear, that would make a massive difference to the amount of carbon it produces, a damn sight more than a couple of wind farms.
Though you do have the concern about where to put the nuclear waste, but that is an issue that can be resolved at some time in the future

I don't know much about it, but another PHer has mentioned duty - would an overall reduction in energy prices brought about by greater adoption of nuclear technology mean a reduction in revenue needed from petrol?

I don't know, it's an open question really!

After the capability to produce a component of one particular type of reactor has been lost. If they're going for more modern designs it may not make much difference.

France has more expensive petrol than the UK now, diesel is still cheaper there though.

We no longer have the capability to manufacture the reactor pressure vessels in this country

Why is that? What has changed to mean that it was possible in the past but isn't possible now?

Not strictly true IIRC. Although not for commercial uses to be fair.

Great news. Leave motorists alone and shut down a fossil fuelled power station is what I say! That'd have a far greater effect on CO2 emissions.

Livingscum was using Nuclear power as an anti-Boris campaign tool on BBC London News last night. Interesting how out of touch with his own party he is.

[footnote]
I was also shocked about how pro-Ken the BBC news presenter was in her interview with Boris. She was asking questions akin to "Give me a yes or no answer: Have you stopped beating your wife?".

Clearly looking for soundbites and trying to score a journalistic coup by getting Boris to say he though Ken was dishonest.

I'd be happy to lay odds on where she'll be voting in the election based on her preformance.

The big question is will they be French (EPR) or American (AP1000) designs that the UK buys? Personally, I'm hoping for French as they are rubbish at producing Safety Cases so buying French will keep me in Business for years to come hehe
