Tories: Re-Phase Traffic Lights To Tackle Jams
Conservatives want to look at traffic management to battle congestion
The answer to London’s traffic problems could lie in traffic lights, the Conservatives believe.
In an interview with headlineauto Theresa Villiers, Shadow Transport Minister, said that there is not an effective transport policy in the suburbs to provide an alternative for those who want to avoid the Congestion Charge.
She believes that the answer is in traffic management, as well as improving public transport.
'We will have to look closely at traffic management,’ she said.
‘The Ken Livingstone way is to actively try to clog up traffic with no commensurate benefit to the pedestrian or cyclist.
‘To tackle congestion we need to look at traffic light re-phasing and getting rid of traffic lights that actually cause congestion.'
She added: 'It is important to improve public transport, cars will remain a necessity but people will shift if there is a reliable and affordable alternative.”
However Ms Villiers said the Conservatives were not prepared to make any big decisions on fuel duty just yet.
'I can’t make any promises on fuel duty but if we do have to have new green taxes then these would have to be given back in tax cuts elsewhere and not used to fill a gap in the finances.
'We will seek to tackle bottlenecks where finances permit and you will certainly not see us backtrack on widening or by-pass schemes as we have seen with the Labour government.
'We will approach road pricing and congestion charging with considerable caution.'
1) This proves how easy it is to be in opposition. Say all the right things to get the voters on your side. Remember that our current Labour government made the same 'common sense' comments about many, many things...which get forgotten as soon as they get in power and realise they need the gazillion quid from taxing people, otherwise the economy would be f
ked.2) This is the yet another reason why Golden Brown will not call a general election - he knows Labour are f
ked as soon as he does. It strikes me that the Conservatives are making more and more sense on many subjects, these days. HOWEVER, I do worry that I am simply buying in to the point made above (1).Come on Brown - call a general election and let the UK public vote your sackless, stupid collection out.
If a change is as good as a rest, voting out Labour would serve at least one purpose - it would remind politicians that they are expendable.

It's the Tories!
, If they get into power again, they'll only go back to there old ways,-(do you really think they've changed!!) of looking after there own, and to hell with the rest of us!!
Despite this, it's an interesting proposal..
, and that P
K Gorgon-(spelt correctly!) Brown should listen to the other parties a but more, instead of 'trying' to score points like a petulant child,-("You've been in power over ten years now Gordon, is'nt it about time you started putting your money where your mouth is and started delivering!!"
x20)And stop banging on about "Ten years of independant growth"
, and start telling these banks to stop lending so friviously, that's behind this "Ten years of independant growth!", not your 'so called' "safe hands!"
.To the politicians: It's not just a London problem though, there are other areas in the UK you know.
For 90% of the time they work fine and for that other 10% you can put up part time signals to manage the busy times if required.
The current fashion in Bucks seems to be to turn roundabouts into signalised junctions, generally this has not improved the junctions.
Sometimes the detection loops prior to a junction are set up to call a red light if someone of detected speeding. I.e. set at 40mph for a 30 limit.
In practice this could be done at most signalised junctions.
stop tory bashing. Dave jumping the red-lights on his bike is Daily Mail news. not real news.
"looking after themselves and screw everyone else" Have you SEEN the unrivalled growth of companies like Tesco?
ooooooooh inflamatory! Get in!
